The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. This demonstrates the foundation of their basics and will take them a long way regardless of their chosen field. I generally try to explain concepts with various analogies instead of just showing the proper…

I believe the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide patient and constant support for them outside of their classroom, and try to clear all their doubts effectively. Moreover, a tutor should guide their students in a manner in which they can focus on key areas of improvement and then work on realistic goals, which…

It is essential that the student feels comfortable learning, and as a tutor I think it is our job to achieve this. Not only should the student feel relaxed while in class, they should start to gain interest in what they are learning. I think at least a tutor can do on the practical aspect is to help the student achieve their goals, lead them and…

I believe that is essential for a tutor to establish and master the “groundwork’’ and fundamental concepts with the students before moving on to more complicated concepts. For subjects like Mathematics and Physics, new knowledge is very commonly built on knowledge that you have learnt before. As a result, tutors need to make sure that…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be able to understand their needs and feelings towards their studies. I believe a tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The impact…

The tutor's first job is converting hard 'textbook language' to easy and illustrative concepts. Next is polishing the student's skills with extensive exercises while making sure he has time for other hobbies. It helps if the tutor is aware of things such as fun interactive quizzes or videos that helps makes concepts seem simpler while also keeping…

Inside Dolls PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student focused on solving trigonometric equations with one unknown using sine, cosine, and tangent, then applied these skills to worded trigonometry problems.

In Year 11 Chemistry, Fatima practised balancing chemical and net ionic equations alongside calculating molar mass and limiting reagents.

For a Year 12 student, recent lessons concentrated on acids and bases with particular attention to titration methods and interpreting results from practical experiments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student, as a tutor noted, "does not study anything of what we cover during the week," so sessions often repeat previous material instead of progressing.

In Year 11 Maths, forgetting key formulas like the trapezoidal rule meant extra time spent revisiting old content before tackling new exam questions.

A Year 5 learner misplaced homework by writing it on scraps rather than in the assigned booklet, leading to unfinished spelling tasks.

Meanwhile, one Year 7 student hesitated to write out steps in algebra due to fear of making mistakes—this slowed their ability to check and correct errors when practicing equations.

Recent Achievements

One Dolls Point tutor recently saw a high school student, who previously relied heavily on guidance, begin to solve problems independently and clearly explain each step back—she even kept her notes more organised than before and was fully aware of her upcoming assessments.

Another secondary student, after struggling with titration calculations in chemistry, managed to work through practice questions until she could complete them accurately on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who had difficulty remembering spelling patterns earlier in the term spelled every word on his list with 100% accuracy and finished all ten words without mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sans Souci Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Scots College, Brighton Preparatory School.
