I think that these 3 things are a must : Work on Student’s strengths. Look for students interests , so we can connect them to the contents being thought. Constant feedback I have good rapport with students , and I firmly believe that all starts with connection, so students can feel at ease. Adaptability is key because with individual…

Firstly, as a former student I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is inspire and guide a student to learn on their own - as easy as it is to simply give away answers, actually getting someone to really put in a bit more effort is the challenging (and more rewarding) part. After that it just comes down to being able to connect with a…

Get to know the student - their interests, beliefs, strengths, etc and building a relationship with them is extremely important. Making the lessons fun and enjoyable for the students - turning lessons into games and making them engaging and rewarding. I would consider myself to be experienced with teaching English and Mathematics.…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are listening to them and paying attention to their needs. Students can be shy and may not make it abundantly clear what they need in any given moment, but there are usually signs, though they may be subtle. It is a tutor's job to monitor the student throughout a lesson and make sure…

I think the most important thing I can do for a student is really just build their foundational understanding of the content. With a strong foundational understanding the students can be more confident and creative in their application in the concepts. I have two main strengths as a tutor. First, I bring a very strong working knowledge of the…

A tutor should help students develop both understanding and confidence. This means identifying gaps in their knowledge, explaining concepts in a way that suits their learning style, and encouraging them to think independently rather than relying on answers. Building a positive relationship, setting achievable goals, and providing consistent…

What I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster a healthy and suitable learning environment. One that motivates students to learn and to be able to confidently apply the knowledge they are taught both in and outside the classroom. Also since students are more likely to do better when they feel encouraged and…

I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

In general, I aim to build confidence and self-belief in a student in order to be independently successful. I find that most students are capable of understanding and learning difficult topics but a limited belief in their abilities prevents them from performing to their best ability. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

Among the most important things a tutor can do for a student is that a tutor must be able to understand a student's learning style so that the student would be able to learn the material in a way that is analogous to their mode of synthesising knowledge. A tutor must do this all the while being open and kind and most especially warm towards the…

Being not just a teacher, but a mentor, a model of inspiration in their life to look forward to. Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. It is crucial for teachers to be patient with students who are learning fresh topics as it takes time to process new information. Students can become distracted or find the subject/topic with no interest, this gives an important responsibility for a tutor to be engaging and encouraging for students to strive for learning. I also believe if the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build a foundation of confidence and independent thinking. Rather than simply providing the correct answers, a tutor should guide a student through the logic of a problem so they can eventually solve it on their own. It is also vital to build a strong rapport where the student feels…

Inside Double BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Eva focused on finding the area of triangles and converting tricky fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

In Year 7, Emmanuel tackled review questions on expressions, equations, and inequalities while also refining his problem-solving approach as misconceptions arose.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Isaac practiced multiplication with emphasis on the 2 and 3 times tables and spent time reading analogue clocks to reinforce understanding of time.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student hesitated with back titration and struggled to express key ideas clearly—"she was unable to phrase this concept succinctly and with clarity," noted her tutor. This meant exam responses were incomplete or vague, affecting marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's test performance suffered from weak time management; she often left questions unfinished.

In Year 4, over-reliance on counting boards slowed basic addition and subtraction, making it hard to move beyond simple sums without aids.

For a Year 8 student, skipping steps when rearranging equations led to confusion in algebra tasks and lost working marks.

Recent Achievements

One Double Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with pH calculations manage to work through multi-step problems independently after some targeted practice, even explaining the difference between strong and weak polyprotic acids.

In Year 8 chemistry, another student who was hesitant with solubility rules last week was able to solve multi-part questions on her own after extra explanation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has started checking her addition answers by counting in fives—a big shift from past weeks when she wouldn't suggest ways to self-check at all.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Double Bay Public School.
