Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student believe in themselves. When students feel supported and not judged, they are much more willing to ask questions and try again when something feels hard. It is also important to guide them rather than just give answers. A good tutor helps students understand how to think through…

Many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they doubt themselves. In this case, it is important for the tutor to encourage students and create a supportive learning environment in a way that helps the student see their progress. It is also important for a tutor to guide the student through a question, rather than just…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them and remind them of their potential. Constant mentoring and motivation goes a long way in maximising students' academic performance. It is also necessary to give students personalised advice to ensure they target their time and energy in the right tasks, especially in…

A tutor’s most important role is to empower the student to become an independent learner. This involves not only clarifying difficult concepts but also teaching effective study strategies, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving techniques. A tutor should create a supportive and nonjudgmental environment where students feel comfortable…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is continual support and encouragement. When students are faced with difficulties such as hard questions they are unable to tackle, I will provide them with guidance, gradually steering them to the correct answer. I believe my most important role as a tutor is provide a supportive environment in a way that it is open to a variety of personalities and ways of thinking. It is only if the student is comfortable that the student and tutor can work cooperatively which will allow for the student to learn. The tutor should also attempt to understand the student.…

The most important thing I can do is give the student a sense of worth, confidence and the reassurance of their own abilities. In the future, my student may or may not forget the content but they will certainly remember the study habits and skills in which they approach learning. It is so important to provide not only academic independence but…

Personalisation. In a classroom, the teacher's attention is divided and the material needs to be taught in ways that the majority understands. However, each student understands and learns differently so having it taylored to the individual (figuring out what they know, what they don't know and what they misunderstood) builds the foundation of…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build both understanding and confidence. It’s important to help students truly understand the concepts they’re learning, but it’s equally important that they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes while they learn. A good tutor should be able to identify where a student is…

Whilst improving their grades is important, the most important thing a tutor can do is help their student find their love for learning, ensuring that they will push themselves to be curious. A tutor is a guide who would be able to give personal learning experience to students which they might not be able to get during a school class. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. Some of the most essential ingredients are to be compassionate and build rapport . If it's a correct match of a student and a teacher, then definitely a tutor can change the overall personality of his student and in turn learn from him as well. It's not only about grades and positions but about life changing lessons that a tutor can give to his students. I am dedicated and true to my students, and according to me this is the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to ensure that the child fully understands the lesson, and finds purpose in it. The student should not only study it because it is a requirement, but because they find it interesting, This I believe is a very crucial task for tutors. If a child is passionate about a subject, they will automatically study…

Inside Double BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Eva focused on finding the area of triangles and converting tricky fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

In Year 7, Emmanuel tackled review questions on expressions, equations, and inequalities while also refining his problem-solving approach as misconceptions arose.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Isaac practiced multiplication with emphasis on the 2 and 3 times tables and spent time reading analogue clocks to reinforce understanding of time.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student hesitated with back titration and struggled to express key ideas clearly—"she was unable to phrase this concept succinctly and with clarity," noted her tutor. This meant exam responses were incomplete or vague, affecting marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's test performance suffered from weak time management; she often left questions unfinished.

In Year 4, over-reliance on counting boards slowed basic addition and subtraction, making it hard to move beyond simple sums without aids.

For a Year 8 student, skipping steps when rearranging equations led to confusion in algebra tasks and lost working marks.

Recent Achievements

One Double Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with pH calculations manage to work through multi-step problems independently after some targeted practice, even explaining the difference between strong and weak polyprotic acids.

In Year 8 chemistry, another student who was hesitant with solubility rules last week was able to solve multi-part questions on her own after extra explanation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has started checking her addition answers by counting in fives—a big shift from past weeks when she wouldn't suggest ways to self-check at all.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Double Bay Public School.
