A tutor must make sure that the student understand the course material, while making the class enjoyable at the same time. It is also essential for a tutor to give students practice questions / past paper questions to help them familiarize with the exam format, and having an answer discussion afterwards. I am good at simplifying scientific and…

The most crucial thing in tutoring must be that the teacher should be impartial, when it comes to tutoring a group of students. The tutor must be able to understand each student's level and must be able to teach with patience. The tutor must make learning fun with practical examples and concept-wise learning methods. Moreover, teacher must be able…

Building confidence is the best thing a tutor can do for a student. Students may need tutors because they don't enjoy the subject, they find it hard, they do poorly, or all of the above. The tutors' role is to be the balance between a teacher and a friend. Helping them understand the questions they have in a relaxed environment is a good way to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and recognise the issues that the student is facing and guide them through the same. I am a patient and a perceptive person. Being a student myself, I believe I can understand the problems and the emotions that students and children face nowadays. My listening skills and my…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to develop the student's critical thinking skills so that when they continue to study or whatever they want to achieve in life, they have the skills to keep learning and teaching themselves. A tutor must not only give a student the confidence and encouragement needed to learn properly, but…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to help students build confidence in the subject. When students feel confident, they develop greater interest, which positively impacts their learning and attitude towards the subject. I am an empathetic tutor who actively listens to my students to support their learning. This approach allows me to…

I think the most important thing for a tutor to do is to provide an engaging lessons whilst also being patient and giving the students time to properly understand and practice each concept. This was how my tutor was to me in high school and I found it very helpful - so I aim to display the same attitude to my students during our sessions :) My…

This includes fostering a safe space where students feel comfortable to ask questions and challenge themselves. Effective methods of studying, instead of encouraging them to spend too much time and get stressed of the massive load of knowledge. It is so much better if a tutor and teach them how to manage their time and work, how to remember the key concepts and apply them to do the real work. I believe that the most important part in a student’s learning is the student’s complete understanding and comprehension of the content. Thus, as a tutor, I will ensure the student is confident in their understanding of a certain concept. It is also important to identify the student’s weaknesses and style of learning to ensure they can…

My philosophy as a tutor is productivity over hard work. Tutors shouldn't just provide step answers for students to memorise, take their assessments and then forget it afterwards but, instead, should provide guidance and advice for students to understand the necessary steps and concepts leading to that solution. I understand that everyone learns…

Most important thing you can do for a student is not to teach a lesson, but give them a reason to learn the lesson. Make everything a piece of cake and fun. Teaching can be mostly boring and overwhelming especially when you are at the receiving end. I would know as i have always had trouble grasping concepts presented by the so called qualified…

One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

The most important thing is to gain a core understanding of the topic, and not just a surface level rote learning of how to solve problems. It's also important to have an understanding of each student and to recognise when to push them and when they've hit a wall (mentally). I think my greatest strength is my approachability and flexibility. I do…

Firstly, a tutor has to be able to understand the student's needs and then personalise a learning plan/ style that works for the student - one size does not fit all! Secondly, the tutor needs to guide the student not get them to parrot generic question answers. It's about building the students confidence up, through positive encouragement, and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the proper tools and techniques to achieve their goals so that eventually they don't need to rely on you to succeed. A tutor should also be patient and provide a thorough explanation for every task, whilst being completely non-judgemental of the student and their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to listen to them. If you do not have two way communication a lot of details can be lost in translation or misunderstood . As a tutor, I'm responsible for providing support to my students, both academically and mentally, in order to help them achieve whatever they want. I also believe that the key to success lies not only in what you learn but also in how you learn it. Therefore, I always try to integrate cultivating suitable learning habits and adequate…

Local Reviews

All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
