I think most importantly, a tutor must create a good learning environment for their students. We've been through high school aswell and we've seen the ups and downs. So the best thing a tutor can do is be patient and supportive and build their confidence. Even if they get a question wrong or don't understand something, we should be patient and…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence in learning. Beyond just solving problems or improving grades, my goal is to help students truly believe in their own abilities. Many students struggle not because they lack potential, but because they doubt themselves. I work to change that. By…

As a tutor, I believe it to be of utmost importance that the student does not feel helpless or lost in a certain school subject, as it is our duty to aid them as much as we can. By teaching and explaining ideas to our students with patience, it is with no doubt that our students will be able to grasp and fathom said ideas in no time. Most…

I believe empowerment is one single most important aspects a tutor can bring to a student's live. I have oftentimes seen students who are lost and have almost given up on their desire to learn a new topic. In these situations, it is crucial to approach such students with a massive smile on your face and listen to their issues and expectations in…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to let the students enjoy and appreciate the lesson. Only then, they will be able to understand and excel in the subjects. I believe the most significant aspect of a tutor is integrity and maintaining a level of respect to my students. In supporting my students, besides academic help, mental supports are also critically vital, hence it is crucial for me to ensure my students are well-balanced of both academic and social aspects. Undoubtedly, the primary focus of a tutor is to be patient with their students. All respective students are different from one another. Which also means they learn differently. As a tutor, it is my job to understand each unique needs, challenges and learning style. With patience, any tutor can fully support the growth of a student, whether it be…

I believe a tutor's role goes beyond helping students achieve good grades. A great tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, help them develop effective study habits and problem-solving skills, and build the confidence to learn independently. Ultimately, the goal is to equip students with skills…

Make them feel comfortable enough to ask any kind of questions and the aim is that they feel confident in problem solving and tackling unfamiliar problems with ease. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe they are capable. A lot of students have already decided they are bad at the subject, so rebuilding that confidence comes first. From there it is about helping them understand the thinking behind an answer, not just the answer itself. If they only memorise a method they…

The important things a tutor can do for their students include making the subject enjoyable and empowering students to reach a point from where they can arrive at solutions on their own. The first and foremost task for tutors is to make the subject more enjoyable than what the students perceive it to be. Once the students start enjoying the…

I think making students feel like they're being seen and heard is a really powerful thing, and to make clear that a tutor isn't just a fixed resource like a book or a video but someone you can interact with and learn from just from someone being there to guide you. Inside Forest LodgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Blake worked on recognising fractions using the Fraction Run game and completed reading comprehension activities on Thunder and Lightning, as well as vertical algorithms for maths.

Year 8 focused on algebra with lessons covering adding and subtracting algebraic fractions, factorisation, and contextual problem solving using equations.

For Year 5, Aditi practised imaginative story writing by building a story arc in her short story "Turkey Head" and strengthened grammar skills through tense revision and vocabulary extension games.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student was reluctant to attempt persuasive writing, needing encouragement to start, and often hesitated with challenging maths reasoning tasks—"he doubted his ability and was slow to begin," noted a tutor.

In Year 7 maths, one student's distraction with online features like BitPaper tabs led to unfinished algorithms and interruptions in focus.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student tackling algebra sometimes avoided self-editing, leaving errors uncorrected and missing feedback opportunities.

For a senior (Year 11) preparing for exams, over-reliance on calculators slowed manual calculation speed during factorization drills; this made timed practice less effective and increased anxiety under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Forest Lodge noticed that a Year 9 student who used to procrastinate now attempts answers straight away, even when unsure—showing more initiative and less hesitation than before.

In another session, a Year 11 student who often struggled to focus was able to finish all their assigned homework without reminders and even asked for extra practice questions on topics they'd previously avoided.

For a younger learner in Year 4, using a visible "to-do" list helped him independently organise his tasks and move from one activity to the next with much less prompting than earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glebe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Forest Lodge Public School.
