A tutor should be able to and simplify a particular concept making it easier for a student to understand. A tutor should also be able to motivate the student and provide constant encouragement when the student is feeling demotivated. A tutor should also be able to adapt and improve teaching styles depending on the student and their progress. It…

As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. Allowing them to do it, will build their confidence for their future, which will be eventually worth it for their life. As a tutor, I am always friendly, patiently try to…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I can sympathise with the students in terms of…

I believe that the most important thing to do is to communicate with my student and get an idea of what they know and don't know. It is important to build upon existing knowledge to explain other concepts and to avoid confusing my student. I think my strength is being patient with my student. I also believe I can encourage improvement and work on…

To teach a topic is to simplify it, make the students imagine and live in the topic by giving them real life examples and case studies. As a tutor I beleive in understanding student's perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes and consider all the possibilities. In my current study, the most important skills are independent learning and peer teaching. I aim to teach students how to identify their gaps and where to look, whether Google or Youtube or books or teachers. I will teach students study skills like note taking or flashcard techniques. It is always for me to put their thoughts first and give them the importance. It is simply how a student learn and grow. A little bit of channeling of concepts, guidance and being there as a support is what makes it work. It is all about concepts how well you know them and how easy you can make them for students to understand. I always try to…

Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. Helping them complete their work is part of the job. However, the most important thing is making sure students are relaxed. If they are getting overwhelmed they shouldn't be pushed because then it'll make them feel like they can't do it. So tackling their weaknesses at a realistic pace will help them not feel pressured to understand straight away.…

A tutor should be able to provide lessons to a student which are tailored to their abilities and learning style. This is something which students can't always get in their regular classes and a tutor could provide through being attentive. They should also be able to make students feel confident in their abilities and iron out any weaknesses. My…

She is fantastic! It was amazing to see the calming influence she had on Max as she patiently stepped him through learning maths. She is astute and quickly understood his capabilities and suggested to me simple steps for how we can focus on bringing him up to speed. I'm delighted.

Inside HamiltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Bella focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers and converting improper fractions, while also revisiting perimeter and area of rectangles to prepare for upcoming assessments.

In Year 9, Josh tackled simultaneous equations and the quadratic equation, using worked examples to solidify his algebraic reasoning.

For Year 10, Ava concentrated on applying the Sine and Cosine Rules in trigonometry and practiced solving geometry problems involving non-right-angled triangles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student often forgot to write all working for fraction and algebra questions; as noted, "forgets to write all working which in turn causes some error." This habit led to mistakes that could have been caught with clearer layout.

A Year 11 student struggled to use feedback from draft notes when revising an assignment—small errors persisted because changes weren't always implemented.

In senior maths, another hesitated on unfamiliar real-world problems, sticking to familiar question types rather than tackling new ones. After setbacks in exam practice, motivation dipped, slowing progress through revision tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Hamilton recently noticed a Year 11 student who previously relied heavily on step-by-step guidance during algebra sessions now independently tackled quadratic equations, checking their work without prompting.

In Year 9 maths, another student who used to rush through long division is now pausing to check each answer and corrects mistakes before moving on, showing much more care with their working out.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who was hesitant with word problems last term has begun breaking them down methodically and can now explain their reasoning out loud while setting up the solutions for area and perimeter questions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hamilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ascot State School.
