Put yourself in the situation. Think about what you would do as someone who is supposedly better at tackling difficult problems if you stumbled upon the same question. Then convey your thinking to the student. I am patient and I am good at predicting what student may find difficult in a certain exam/test. I am also adaptive to individual dilemmas…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student believe in their own ability to succeed. A tutor has the power to inspire and guide academic understanding, with which comes a student's confidence and motivation towards that subject. By forming a positive relationship with tailored lessons, a tutor can create an environment…

For me, I believe that not only is it important for a tutor to impart academic knowledge upon the student in their lessons, but also to make sure to impart this knowledge in an engaging, creative way and check in, providing extra guidance and exercises as necessary so as much as possible they can truly understand and absorb the concepts. I also…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to foster curiosity and build a student's confidence. Encouraging students to study a subject for a deeper purpose, rather than simply aiming for high grades, helps them develop genuine interest and motivation to learn. When students become curious, they are more likely to explore ideas…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

The most important things as a tutor is avoid giving shortcuts to the students. If a student is struggling with a problem, I will let them think first, guide them with small things with only giving slight hints, and help them slowly reach to the answer themselves. Instead of just giving the formula or answers, I focus on helping them understand…

While helping students learn is obviously important, the psychological and social aspects of tutoring are arguably much more important. A good tutor will help give their students the support and connection they need so that they can become better, more confident and independent learners. I believe a tutor should always be reliable, punctual, patient, kind, and supportive - as this creates a safe learning environment for all students. I am newly graduated, meaning I still recall all the emotions and stresses of high school, and know the content and structure of various subjects extremely well. I excelled at my own school in English…

The most important thing is truly caring about the student's needs and not just delivering the content so that whatever needs to be taught is "taught". There could by many reasons why students come to tutoring: they're struggling to keep up, they want to excel or simply their parents want them to go. No matter the reason, what I think is most important for a tutor to do is to try and make the students actually interested in the content in front of them and then aid them as they grapple with it.…

Thus, I believe that a tutor's biggest responsibility is to patiently guide the student through that difficulty, in other words, to unlock their ability to comprehend a lingual matter. Inside Huntleys PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Rose worked on classifying angles and triangles, as well as practicing rounding with larger numbers up to the millions.

Year 8 student Jess focused on trigonometry basics, learning how to use sine, cosine, and tangent in right-angled triangle problems, and practiced rearranging equations for linear relationships using graphing techniques.

Imogen (Year 7) revised adding and subtracting fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numerals, while also tackling lowest common multiples and highest common factors through practical examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tended to avoid showing working for algebra and factorisation, especially with "simpler" steps; as a tutor noted, "she skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors." This led to small mistakes going unnoticed until the end of questions.

In contrast, a Year 4 student hesitated when faced with mixed times tables and sometimes reverted to finger-counting under pressure—this slowed her progress during mental arithmetic drills.

Both students occasionally lost confidence after minor setbacks, resulting in extra time spent double-checking answers rather than moving forward confidently with new material.

Recent Achievements

A Huntleys Point tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with complex algebra now methodically checks her multi-step solutions and even corrects minor errors on her own.

In Year 8, another student who once avoided asking questions now regularly seeks clarification during lessons, especially when tackling trickier Pythagoras' theorem problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled to recall times tables can now complete all six times table questions—both in and out of order—with perfect accuracy and has started applying new mental strategies for harder multiplication problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverside Girls High School.
