I also think that a tutor's role as a mentor in general is important I am very passionate about it and that allows me to enthusiastically and actively engage with students and try hard to help them understand and appreciate more…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be a role model for students by teaching and encouraging them in all aspects of life. I believe that a good tutor would empower and inspire the students to strive towards their dreams and goals and support them in the process. I believe that I have a good knowledge base of all the concepts in…

The most important things I do as a tutor are listening carefully to understand where a student is struggling, explaining concepts in a way that matches their vocabulary and thinking style, and building the right mindset. Knowledge alone can only take a student so far - confidence in their own understanding is what truly helps them improve and…

The most important you can do for a student is to know their abilities and work their capabilities to make them better at the subject they're trying to get better at. It is also important to understand every student is different and not all of them can grapple a concept quickly. But as a tutor, I must make sure I am accounting for each students…

Being a teacher, it's his/her duty to make the student understand any concept accurately with an ease and with great patience. It is not right to shout or get angry on any person if he or she is not able to do any thing, all you need is some time and practice and also some tricks to solve any problem. I am a very patient person and work with full…

I believe tutoring helps students develop a genuine love for learning. There are 2 characteristics a tutor needs to achieve this. Firstly, the tutor should have an open and friendly personality. Learning is inherently effortful, and having someone friendly to guide the process makes it more enjoyable and productive. Additionally, tutors need to…

It is imperative for a tutor to know the students' weakness in order to be able to plan, practice, and implement the necessary actions/studies needed for the quickest and most effective improvements. I touched on some of these points in my previous answers, but as a tutor I believe the ultimate goal should be to provide one's students with an academic toolbox in the form of an understanding of the fundamental principles of any given topic. By covering first principles, and providing students with problem-solving abilities, he or she can then…

Also, fostering a supportive, non-judgmental environment is key for students to ask questions freely and grasp concepts without worrying about making mistakes. One of the most important things a tutor can do is instill confidence in their students so they can tackle problems they were previously unfimiliar with on their own, as well as perform in high stress environments, such as tests. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to make learning simple, build the student's confidence, and create a safe space where they don't feel scared to ask questions. Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can provide…

I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

Students can of course vary greatly in their strengths, difficulties and needs. This is true both intrinsically and as a function of development and external context. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is therefore to diagnose those individual needs, and "meet the student where they are." The essential problem of tutoring…

Inside KenmoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Kiri began breaking down the Biology syllabus and completed a baseline quiz on genetics and evolution to assess understanding.

In Year 8, simultaneous equations were tackled using both substitution and elimination methods, with extra support for inequalities from earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 session focused on decimal operations—including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—plus solving multi-step word problems for real-world practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student left her notebook at school and still needed to begin organising maths notes separately for home study; as the tutor observed, "writing in random places for each one" made revision less effective.

In Year 12 Chemistry, one student struggled with structuring and planning a report—difficulty meeting deadlines meant feedback could not be applied before submission.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner did not complete assigned homework, impacting their readiness for new topics.

In a senior maths session, over-reliance on calculators led to errors like using the wrong formula without back-checking, which slowed progress during independent practice.

Recent Achievements

A Kenmore tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who started working through stoichiometry problems independently after initially needing each step explained—by the fourth question, she worked out the solution solo.

Another high schooler in Year 10, who previously hesitated to ask for help, now speaks up when stuck and only needs minimal explanation before finishing problems on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled with long division picked it up quickly this week and managed subtraction and division steps smoothly without extra prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kenmore Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kenmore State School.
