A tutor must always have patience for their students. They cannot rush them, and a student cannot be forced to understand specific content. I believe that tutors must friendly, approachable and sociable people who the student can feel comfortable around, for a relaxed learning environment. Students (and their parents) must feel that their tutor is…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and foster independent thinking. A good tutor guides their student to understand the "why" behind concepts, helping them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This is essential in ensuring that the student is able to independently…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student have confidence in himself. This is because, as a tutor nothing brings greater joy than seeing your student succeed. One of my main strengths as a tutor is my experience with the International Baccalaureate program. The IB program is known for its rigorous…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and create a safe space for the student. When tutors don't listen it'll be a waste of time for both parties. This can be very hard because sometimes students may not be able to pinpoint what they don't understand or they might just feel a bit embarrassed. This is where…

In middle school, I wasn’t a particularly bright student, and I needed the help of tutoring to catch up with my grade level. After trying various teachers and tutors, one of the most impactful things I learnt was how much of a leader a tutor needs to be. It’s all well if someone knows the subject material, but if they don’t understand how to…

To make them self - sufficient and give them the confidence to tackle problems and subjects on their own. The most important thing is to provide clarity and build a student’s independence. A tutor helps the student understand the subject matter in detail and at ease. He/she breaks the complex problem which require analytical skills to simpler arithmetic problems a student can work on. This in turn builds confidence in the student who in turn can easily interpret exam-setting questions as well as real life logic with ease. I like to…

Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max practised addition and subtraction with four-digit numbers and explored algebra through interactive games, while also tackling a NAPLAN reading comprehension task.

Year 7 student Reuben worked on expanding brackets and simplifying algebraic expressions by grouping like terms, as well as reviewing more challenging homework problems.

For Year 8, Ella focused on solving equations with x-terms on both sides—including those resulting in fractional answers—and consolidated her understanding of index laws during the session.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student often avoided writing out steps, choosing to solve equations mentally—"he was very fluent with the calculator," as a tutor observed, but over-reliance on it led to small errors and missed working in homework.

In Year 10 trigonometry, skipping units and failing to show sketches meant lost marks even when answers were correct.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner resisted tackling long division unless fully confident; this hesitation slowed progress in new maths topics.

In senior chemistry, back-checking sometimes turned into cosmetic correction rather than real error analysis, leaving calculation slips unresolved before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Kensington tutor recently noticed a big shift in Max's attitude toward reading—where he once dreaded reading aloud and froze up at mistakes, he now brings his own book to sessions and reads enthusiastically, even when he stumbles.

In high school maths, Reuben has started tackling challenging algebraic equations with less hesitation; after struggling with factorisation early on, he now solves GCF problems—even tricky ones—in a single lesson.

William also made a breakthrough in geometry by quickly recalling SOH CAH TOA rules for right-angled triangles and correctly identifying triangle sides without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Public School.
