I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

In my opinion, being a person that students are comfortable with to reach out for help is one of the most important things. A tutor should be there to assist them, not add stress or pressure to them. I also think it is important for tutors to motivate the students to learn, instead of just giving answers, and in motivating them, tutors should be…

Always know what students need and what's their priority. This means a tutor need to show respect to students. They need to know very well about the students and are wise and knowledgable enough to give good advice and make sure students love listening to the advice. I love to solve questions. If I could make complicated things into easy ones, I'd…

Making a student learn and fully comprehend a subject matter while not belittling them in the process, but rather motivating them and getting them to enjoy learning about that subject. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching…

Like I said, patience and comfortable environment created between the tutor and the student. Rest all can be taken care of by referring to the respective books and study materials. Interactive studies make students remember and understand topics really well. If a tutor can help the student to enjoy the subjects, then it becomes an activity which…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. Its okay to make mistakes but if your student is afraid of you , they would never ask questions and will be afraid to make mistakes so the tutor will never be able to…

Try to make them feel confident in themselves and build intuition. I will consistently encourage all my students to always try, and practise, and try again, until they master whatever they were first struggling with. Their dreams become my dreams for them, so I will never let my students give up on reaching their goals. Improvements do not happen overnight, but whenever they do happen, no matter how small, I…

The most vital thing a tutor can do is to make study fun , yes, a student who just remained worried about studies and exams should no longer be worried if he or she has a tutor . A tutor should be someone on whom a student could rely on about their studies and performance. apart for that , a tutor should understand a student’s weaknesses and…

In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

I believe support and encouragement are the most important elements that me as a tutor can help my students. Some students do not like to be pushed, and they need time for themselves as well, so supporting and encouraging them will direct them towards success. Some other students may experience difficulties in study (do not get a good result), so…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to pivot their teaching style in order to suit not only the content but how the student learns. Local Reviews

Stephan has been tutoring my daughter for a couple of years now. He is approachable, professional and excellent tutor. Eliza has gained and maintained her confidence in Maths which is especially important in Year 12. Stephan helped her transition to Zoom tutoring last year when he couldn't come to our house and this was so successful they continued their sessions remotely. I highly recommend Stephan!
Tanya Bailey, Kensington Park

Inside Kensington ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Priya focused on coordinate geometry by calculating midpoints and exploring perpendicular gradients, as well as starting linear equations using the Cartesian plane.

Year 10 student Marcus worked through solving simultaneous equations and applied perimeter and area calculations to geometry problems, often using diagrams to clarify each step.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily reviewed bivariate statistics by interpreting residual plots and practising exponential regression techniques for her upcoming assignment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, one student was hesitant to seek clarification on assignment requirements and needed reminders to double-check with the teacher, which left him "a bit unsure about his assignment."

A Year 10 learner preparing for a test struggled with keeping written work neat when copying matrices, making errors more likely during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student occasionally forgot essential materials like a notebook or calculator, which disrupted focus during sessions.

In Year 7 geometry, skipping labels and units while finding area sometimes led to confusion over which formula to use.

Recent Achievements

A Kensington Park tutor noticed Armando, a senior student, has shifted from hesitating on normal distribution questions to tackling them with real independence—he even reviewed his B+ practice exam and pinpointed exactly where he could improve.

In Year 10, Alia started off unsure about approaching new problems but now tackles worksheets on her own before asking for help only when stuck, and she recently previewed surds confidently after solid trigonometry results.

Meanwhile, a younger student who once mixed up shapes can now quickly name different polygons and explain which sides are equal without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marryatville Primary School.
