Illustrating the solution, explaining with the right examples, respecting everyone's views and value every question however simple it maybe. Making the discourse interesting and interactive. These are the most important things a tutor must deliver while teaching students. Simplifying complex topics with day to day examples is what I do. I will not…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to build a student’s confidence while helping them develop a genuine understanding of the subject rather than simply memorising answers. A good tutor should create a positive and encouraging environment, identify areas where the student needs extra support, and provide personalised strategies to…

I want my students to leave each lesson feeling more capable than when they arrived. To me, effective tutoring is about more than improving a mark — it is understanding what is holding a student back and giving them the tools, strategies and encouragement to move forward. Every student learns differently, so I would take the time to…

1. Provide personalized support: A tutor should tailor their teaching methods to suit the individual needs and learning style of each student. This may involve identifying areas of weakness, adapting lesson plans, and providing additional resources to help the student succeed. 2. Build confidence: A tutor should help boost a student's…

This involves creating a supportive learning environment, providing personalised learning materials, and encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Amidst the competitive pressure of institutions on this generation's children, one of the vital things a tutor can do for a fellow student is to provide a safe space for them to be able to express themselves, i.e allowing them to ask questions and understand the weaknesses of their students. That way they will be enthusiastic to learn from their…

Being patient and understanding. I would not want my students to just meet more deadlines when it comes to learning. A tutor should also have a good understanding of the topics that they are supposed to teach, and should also be willing to adapt to ways of teaching because every student is not the same and one key cannot open all locks. I am a…

Believe that the student can succeed in the subject no matter their current grades, and to instil that belief in the child as well. I am an exceptionally quick learner and am empathetic enough to understand what exactly the child is struggling with understanding and their gaps that need plugging. I also have experience lifting students' Maths…

Keeping them interested in the subject, making them believe that it's not just about marks, but understanding. Making them to fall in love with the subject. Doing that subject should make them feel happy, not anxious. I focus more on logic and intuition, rather than memorizing. Being someone who used to fail regularly before becoming one of the…

Creating a wanting to learn. No child will improve grades if they do not want to learn and that comes from my own personal experience. Therefore the most important thing for me is that I can help a student enjoy learning and then through that passion myself and the student can enjoy seeing improvements in their learning and grades. It’s also…

Most important thing would be to provide ample support for self study including guides and worksheets. Another thing would be to set clear small weekly goals to remind students of their progress and allow them to reflect and get motivated to stay on path I think I am someone who recognises when there is a lack of foundation in a concept and I am…

I believe the best thing I can teach a student is the ability to think critically and for themselves. Rather than giving them the answer, I would show them how to get to an answer so they become independent and self-sufficient over time. Patience and empathy. I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach him different things while motivating the student and making sure he/she/they understand the essence of the teaching so that they can apply it in daily life rather than asking them to memorize different things. This way the students not only get good grades but also store whatever…

Inside Kings ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ben tackled ratios and rates of change using real-life examples, while Year 9 student Maya focused on calculating measures of central tendency and exploring variance and distribution in data sets.

For Year 6, Olivia practiced interpreting images to answer inferential questions and read short texts to build her skills in drawing conclusions from written clues, also solving maths word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Recent Challenges

Distraction and loss of focus were key challenges in both primary and high school lessons.

For example, as a tutor noted, "Olly gets distracted and off topic very easily," which led to needing direct answers instead of practicing inferencing in Year 5 reading and maths.

In Year 11 Maths, forgetting to write units or skipping written working created confusion during problem-solving with rates of change.

Several students did not consistently complete or remember homework for revision—one high schooler "sometimes has difficulty remembering the concepts taught previously," especially when workings weren't recorded, resulting in repeated gaps during algebra practice.

Recent Achievements

One Kings Park tutor recently saw a Year 11 student move from confusion to confidence with powers and square roots—after reviewing her earlier questions, she worked through new problems independently without needing hints.

In another high school session, Jurgen had previously been making "silly mistakes" in algebra, but after focusing on study strategies and self-checking, he began identifying errors himself before the tutor pointed them out.

Meanwhile, Olly (Year 3) surprised his tutor by looking up unfamiliar word definitions during reading time instead of waiting for help, showing real initiative that hadn't been there before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rosalie Primary School.
