I think the most important thing a tutor can do is support and mentor a student, not just teach the content. That means creating a safe, encouraging space where they feel comfortable asking questions, building their confidence, and being guided. A good tutor also helps students develop better study habits and self-belief, setting them up for…

Create a comfortable, relaxed environment to learn and ask questions. Improve confidence: many students don't know what they're capable of, and just need the self-belief to show it off. Be able to react to a student's needs as they develop and progress in order to continue learning as efficiently as possible. I believe I am relatable and good…

The most important thing would be to create a safe space for students, so they will feel welcomed and understood. This can build their confidence as well. Once they feel safe, the students can ask any question and tutor can help them and fill their knowledge gap. My strength would be perseverance, adaptability, and emphaty. I would try and give…

A tutor should focus on helping students truly understand concepts, use practical methods to improve retention, and encourage independent thinking rather than just memorisation. I think for a tutor it's being able to be contacted even after lesson hours. As for maths, it's very difficult to find solutions online and last minute stress before an exam is not good, so I think being available to be contacted and being flexible is the most important thing for a tutor. I like to make the classes interactive and fun to keep…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are listening to them and paying attention to their needs. Students can be shy and may not make it abundantly clear what they need in any given moment, but there are usually signs, though they may be subtle. It is a tutor's job to monitor the student throughout a lesson and make sure…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. Finding unique ways to interpret notes and…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage and empower them. I believe most students can learn most subjects/tasks but it's just about finding the way of learning that works for them. I am positive and encouraging. This involves not only clarifying difficult concepts but also teaching effective study strategies, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving techniques. Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

To me, a tutor must be able to effectively communicate ideas to students in a manner that allows them to understand the concept. Understanding of more conceptually difficult topics is a difficulty every student faces and is ultimately the barrier against marks. Being able to really connect with a student and portray the idea at hand in a manner in…

Creating a safe and welcoming environment is the first step to meaningful learning. Creativity and adaptability – Every student learns differently, so it’s…

Local Reviews

After the last session Mia said she was happy with Sam and didn't want to change to anyone else. Sam is very bright and Mia will never be an advanced Maths student but they seem to have worked out how to communicate and that just builds her confidence so she doesn't see a difficult question and get overwhelmed. Sam is also very punctual and communicates well with us as well. Even the dog likes him now.

Inside Kurraba PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on area of triangles using decimal and fractional multiplication, then tackled unknown side problems with practical examples.

For Year 8, Ava focused on congruency tests for triangles and quadrilaterals, using diagrams to identify key properties and revisited composite area and coordinate plane questions from her school homework.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily reviewed trigonometric ratios in preparation for upcoming assessments and practiced recognizing different angle relationships—complementary, co-interior, and alternate angles—through targeted problem sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often hesitated to attempt algebraic problem-solving questions, preferring decimals instead of setting out working for equations—this slowed skill growth in algebra.

In a senior year, "she frequently needed to refer back to notes for specific ratios," which interrupted focus during trigonometry practice and made revision less efficient.

For a Year 9 geometry task, the tutor observed that skipping clear layout meant errors went unnoticed until answers were checked together.

One student's tendency to avoid showing steps—especially with calculations involving area or conversions—meant time was lost retracing logic instead of moving forward with new material.

Recent Achievements

A Kurraba Point tutor recently noticed a big change in one Year 10 student: after struggling with time management in past Olympiad exams, she completed this term's paper more confidently and finished within the time limit, needing less guidance to spot her own errors during review.

In Year 11 maths, Charlie now tackles past papers independently—he highlights key concepts on his resources sheet and no longer needs notes for most questions, a shift from earlier sessions where he hesitated to work alone.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was reluctant to explain her reasoning is now much more open about sharing her thought process when solving geometry problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Loreto Kirribilli.
