I think the most important things a tutor can do is to build the student's confidence. Sometimes students may feel afraid to make mistakes even though in fact they know more than they think. A tutor should also keep encouraging the students to keep going even when it's tough. I think one of my strengths is being patient. I don't mind explaining…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

As a student, I've enjoyed classes when they are interactive and fun. We tend to show more interest in the subject if the class is engaging. I'm approachable, observing and identifying each kid to study their character and focus on them in a certain way, keeping the class fun and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to let the students enjoy and appreciate the lesson. Only then, they will be able to understand and excel in the subjects. I am really good at identifying the difficulty that a student face and guide him or her on how he can overcome the situation. Many a times, students are not meeting his…

The three most important things a tutor can do for a student are providing personalized support, fostering a growth mindset, and promoting effective study habits. Firstly, personalized support tailors lessons to the student's specific needs, addressing their weaknesses and enhancing their strengths. Secondly, instilling a growth mindset encourages…

Being not just a teacher, but a mentor, a model of inspiration in their life to look forward to. The importance of a good tutor in shaping up a bright student regardless of age or background can't be underestimated. Empathizing with the student, seeing from both perspectives of the study load and the curriculum, teaching in a relatable way to the…

I believe a tutor's role goes beyond helping students achieve good grades. A great tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, help them develop effective study habits and problem-solving skills, and build the confidence to learn independently. Ultimately, the goal is to equip students with skills…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

Make them feel comfortable enough to ask any kind of questions and the aim is that they feel confident in problem solving and tackling unfamiliar problems with ease. Undoubtedly, the primary focus of a tutor is to be patient with their students. All respective students are different from one another. Which also means they learn differently. As a tutor, it is my job to understand each unique needs, challenges and learning style. With patience, any tutor can fully support the growth of a student, whether it be…

I think the key thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is show them the importance of intrinsic motivation. Whilst any tutor can simply give a student the answer, an excellent tutor will inspire a student to work through challenges and learn for the sake of learning. This intrinsic motivation will last beyond primary and high school, and is…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build a foundation of confidence and independent thinking. Rather than simply providing the correct answers, a tutor should guide a student through the logic of a problem so they can eventually solve it on their own. It is also vital to build a strong rapport where the student feels…

The most important thing is building understanding, not just getting to the right answer — a student should walk away knowing why something works, not just what to write down. I think most importantly, a tutor must create a good learning environment for their students. We've been through high school aswell and we've seen the ups and downs. So the best thing a tutor can do is be patient and supportive and build their confidence. Even if they get a question wrong or don't understand something, we should be patient and…

Inside LewishamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liam worked on addition and subtraction using number lines, as well as identifying equality statements and basic counting strategies through interactive games.

In Year 10, Emily focused on BODMAS equations and fractions from her homework before tackling introductory algebra questions involving like terms.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Andrea revised percentage calculations without a calculator and practised the unitary method to solve real-world profit scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to show full working in algebra and coordinate geometry, leading to hidden errors; as one tutor observed, "extra attention to detail would help minimise mistakes."

In Year 9, a student often avoided writing out solutions neatly or following class formats, which made it harder to spot where steps went wrong—especially with formula rearrangement.

For a Year 6 learner, forgetting homework and rarely practicing challenging questions limited progress when faced with multi-step division problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 2 student's loss of confidence after setbacks led them to guess answers rather than try new approaches.

Recent Achievements

A Lewisham tutor recently saw Annabelle, a high school student, shift from hesitating with trigonometry to confidently identifying which function—sin, cos, or tan—to use and starting to rearrange equations independently, something she found confusing before.

In another session, Liam (Year 3) began writing his maths and diagrams out neatly without prompting; he used to skip steps and rush through work.

Justin, also in high school, was initially unsure about coordinate geometry but after extra practice now works through algebraic operations more smoothly.

Annabelle finished her lesson by solving a full set of angle sum problems with minimal help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christian Brothers' High School Lewisham.
