Help them build confidence within themselves and their own abilities. Students perform best when they are confident and believe in themselves, because they tend not to second guess and make mistakes. Coming up with different ways to explain concepts for different learning styles. Coming up with analogies and physical explanations of concepts. My…

A tutor is someone that a student can rely on for support. They are pragmatic in finding ways to ensure the student has a positive experience with learning. The student is in control, and the tutor is a guide that assists and also facilitates the student to take safe risks, ask questions and completely engage with their learning in ways suitable…

I consider being empathetic and adaptive for students is highly important. Being empathetic of your students struggles and not putting them down for not understanding is the most important thing a tutor can do for them to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their learning. Adaptability is also a key component for a tutor as not every…

The most important thing a teacher can teach a student is something about how they learn best, like what techniques, environements, etc. they need to learn effectively. This is not only a skill that will help them any time they need to learn something in the future, but also something that will help them enjoy the process. I think I have excellent…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and make learning feel approachable. When students feel supported and understood, they're far more likely to engage, ask questions, and take risks, which is where real growth happens! A great tutor doesn't just explain the content clearly; they also adapt to the…

To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence, not just help them get the answer. A good tutor should be patient, supportive, and able to explain concepts clearly step by step. It is also important to create a comfortable environment where the student feels safe to make mistakes, ask questions, and slowly…

One of the important that a tutor can do for a student is being a good listener. Before heading towards the subject content the tutor needs to listen to their students. We need to know their mood and level of understanding in order to continue. There is no use in continuing with the subject if the student doesn't understand anything, so the tutor…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. The most important thing a tutor could do for a student is show them that every student responds to education in the same way or at the same pace and whichever way they process information is perfectly normal. The goal is to maximize learning, in the way that works best for the students. I have seen this significantly reduce academic frustrations…

Teach obviously! but i think if the tutor can make the lessons as fun as possible so that the student looks forward to them as something enjoyable rather than as purely work, the best results will occur. To reveal the simple nature of (what may seem) complex. Once a student understands that they have the ability to unravel something they thought was out of their reach, their confidence and newfound ability create a framework for smart study skills and eagerness to learn in the future. Those two qualities are necessary for the independent learning…

Inside LilyfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Talia practised using Pythagoras' theorem to find missing side lengths and worked on rearranging equations in geometry problems.

In Year 9, Keira focused on solving challenging trigonometry questions and reviewed her recent test on probability, also revisiting how to simplify and expand algebraic expressions.

Greta, in Year 11, concentrated on differentiation—covering the product, chain, and quotient rules—and extended this by finding derivatives of inverse functions during calculus practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly forgot to bring their maths homework, so written work was scattered and difficult to track—"work is in one place only if homework comes every lesson."

In Year 10, a student tended to skip writing out working for easier algebra questions; as noted, "she lost marks by just writing the answer or partial steps, especially in assessments."

Meanwhile, a senior biology student left assignments until the last minute. This led to rushed note-taking and incomplete reports. The pressure of unfinished tasks lingered into class discussions, making it harder to consolidate concepts and scientific terminology under time constraints.

Recent Achievements

One Lilyfield tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid showing her working now confidently writes out every step and explains her reasoning as she solves trig and algebra problems.

Another high school student, after struggling with quadratic equations, managed to solve for intercepts independently across all question types—a clear turnaround from earlier sessions where she needed significant prompting.

At the primary level, a Year 4 student surprised both himself and his tutor by not only understanding fractions on his first day learning them at school but also improving his timetables since last lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library and History Leichhardt Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like Inner Sydney Montessori School, Lilyfield.
