the most important part a tutor like me can do is encouraging students to believe in their abilities and providing positive reinforcement as they progress. Also, the gist of my 2 years of tutoring would be offering tailored teaching experience where adapting teaching methods to suit the student’s learning styles and needs and working on…

As a tutor, the highest priority to students to teach them to understand the motivations and purpose of study. Though understanding course content is important in its own right, I believe learning to learn, critical thinking, and structuring arguments are the skills that stick with the student past high school and into university and the…

A tutor must be able to understand the student's perspective. Students think in unique ways and a good tutor should encourage that level of thinking. A tutor must also be equipped enough to answer any out-of-syllabus questions that students may have. A good tutor should encourage an inquisitive mindset among their students. I strive to do these…

Adapting to the student's learning style/preference (if the student is a visual learner, create pictures)/ If the student prefers a repetition of similar problem, create more problems for the students). The most important thing is to provide clarity and build a student’s independence. A tutor should identify where a student is struggling and give them the specific tool, whether it's a math formula or a study technique, to solve problems on their own. It’s about being a reliable resource they can trust. My strengths are my versatility and my…

I believe that teaching students a syllabus and helping them achieve their grades is only part of a tutor's job. The most important aspect of a tutor is the ability to pass down a study discipline to their students. Good grades can help a student for a year, but good discipline will help a student their entire life. When I am teaching, not only…

I think tutoring is about confidence just as much as academic ability and performance. I believe a good tutor not only teaches the content and helps the student to learn, but also encourages them to feel confident in themselves and their work, and motivated to do their best. I believe the secret to academic success is confidence, especially…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help their student feel confident and capable. It’s all about creating a comfortable space where they can ask questions, tailoring the approach to fit their needs, and giving them the tools to solve problems on their own. I think it’s also important to create an environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions without worrying about being wrong. One of the most important things a tutor can do, other than assisting them to excel in all areas of learning is to instil them with the confidence to learn. This is crucial as it allows students to believe that school work/learning is to be something that is fun rather than a “chore†or boring. Once this occurs, the student begins to engage…

Academic impact is a primary objective of a tutor. The result for a student may not always be dramatic, going from F to A+, but it can also involve slow progress. Always staying engaged with the student, periodically inquiring about their comfort in learning the subject, and creating a conducive atmosphere for learning are essential. A tutor must…

To me, a tutor must be able to effectively communicate ideas to students in a manner that allows them to understand the concept. Understanding of more conceptually difficult topics is a difficulty every student faces and is ultimately the barrier against marks. Being able to really connect with a student and portray the idea at hand in a manner in…

Rosemary Peppard, Little Bay

Inside Little BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ethan practiced multiplying and dividing fractions, then moved on to solving perimeter and area problems for composite shapes using diagrams.

For Year 8, Olivia worked through expanding algebraic brackets and applied these skills to more complex equations, with a focus on clear setting out of her working.

In Year 10, Sam reviewed trigonometry concepts including the sine and cosine rules, reinforcing understanding by tackling exam-style questions involving real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 maths, one student's written work was still messy and hard to follow, making it difficult to spot calculation errors when tackling fractions.

A Year 10 student delayed sharing assessment deadlines until the last minute; as a tutor noted, "their assessment was due that very day," which left no time for targeted support.

In senior English, another student received feedback but only made minimal changes to reading comprehension tasks rather than addressing the core suggestions. This meant valuable strategies weren't applied before practice exams.

Recent Achievements

A Little Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to freeze up at simultaneous equations now working through them independently, even explaining her steps aloud without prompting.

In another session, a Year 8 student who had trouble remembering formulas began recalling key content and could apply it in new problems with little hesitation.

Meanwhile, a primary school student—who was previously reluctant to ask questions—started openly admitting when he felt stuck and asked for help on tricky perimeter challenges. Last week, he finished all ten practice problems on his own after seeking guidance just once.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malabar Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like La Perouse Public School.
