I think the most important thing is to encourage a student to be independent and learning how to solve their own problems. So, by not giving them the answers outright but ensuring that they are taught key methods that enable them to solve their own issue is very important especially in the long term. Having patience and attention to explain…

I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

A tutor's primary aim is to instill confidence in the student. Students seek tutors for a variety of reasons. Maybe the student is struggling and needs someone to explain things more clearly. A wise and patient tutor will do that, and the student will feel more confident; that they can do it! Some students come to tutoring with no real problems,…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be very clear and not convoluted when explaining topics, equations, etc. to students, as it can be very easy to get intimated as a student and end up confused. I believe it is also important not to assume any knowledge straight away from students but to intentionally ask what it is that they…

Inside ManningTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Charlie focused on solving linear equations, including those involving fractions and progressively challenging questions.

For Year 9, Mae worked through stem-and-leaf plots and explored measures of central tendency using real data sets.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Sarah practiced converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, applying these skills to everyday ratio problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student arrived without a formula sheet, which meant advanced chemistry problems couldn't be attempted; "we had to stick to basic practice," as noted.

In Year 8 maths, missed homework was highlighted twice before the break—2.5 hours set but not yet completed.

For a Year 10 English essay, facing the full draft caused overwhelm: ideas stalled until structure was broken into smaller steps.

During Year 9 algebra, skipping written working led to sign errors in linear equations that went unnoticed at first glance. In these moments, confidence dipped and momentum slowed as gaps became more visible.

Recent Achievements

One Manning tutor noticed that Mae, a Year 10 student, has started to persist with 3D geometry problems despite previously sharing how much she struggled to visualise them—last week, she worked through half and quarter cylinder questions without giving up.

Charlie (Year 11) had been making small errors in coordinate geometry but recently completed a full set independently of complex ratio and backwards-solving tasks for the first time.

In English, a high school student who was often hesitant about essay writing produced a solid response on their own and began asking for new strategies to tackle exam questions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Manning Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Manning Primary School.
