I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to teach them in a way in which they will learn effectively, as well as finding out what their academic goals are and doing everything they can to help them reach these goals. I believe my strengths as a tutor include the ability to break-down and explain complicated concepts in a…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is build a balance of trust and authority with their student. Students should feel confident that they can come to me with any doubts without fear of being judged. At the same time, I set clear boundaries so that during class time, we stay focused on learning without distractions from…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. Finding unique ways to interpret notes and…

The fundamental thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach and monitor the progress of a child. I call it teaching with a commitment. Aside from the broad aspects of teaching, there are other things that a tutor can do like listening to the student. What are his struggles? How does he feel towards the subject? Knowing the weaknesses of the…

The most important thing I’ve learned from my experience as a student receiving tutoring is that real understanding matters more than memorising steps. When something is explained clearly and in a way that matches how I learn, it becomes much easier to actually grasp the concept rather than just remember it for a short time. I’ve also…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to inculcate the trust in them by interacting in a positive manner and to give a complete understanding of the subject being taught. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s self-confidence. Often, the biggest barrier to learning is the fear of being 'bad' at a subject. A great tutor removes that fear by creating a structured environment where the student feels in control of their progress. Active listening to identify exactly where the gaps in…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to not only teach content but to be there as a mentor. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build trust, show patience, and create a supportive learning environment. When a student feels safe, understood, and not rushed, they're far more likely to engage, ask questions, and grow in confidence. Patience allows students to learn at their own pace, and trust ensures they…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is not pressure students and understand that everyone learns differently. A tutor is a mentor for his students. For a tutor, it is necessary to have full knowledge of that field he/she is teaching. In most areas, its a misconception that tutors are there to help students in coming first in every aspect related to studies. But that's not true, in my opinion, tutors can only give knowledge of any particular subject/sector…

Inside MarayongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jacqui worked on long division, multiplication, and indices in preparation for her recent test.

In Year 8, Alysse focused on financial maths by completing a homework assessment and then tackled compound interest questions to strengthen understanding of percentages in real-world contexts.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Grace revised algebra skills by simplifying and expanding expressions and also practiced applying the trapezoidal rule to solve area problems.

Recent Challenges

During a recent Year 9 session, one student avoided showing working in algebra, preferring to "do it in her head"—as the tutor noted, this led to small errors that could have been caught with clearer written steps.

In Year 7, another student skipped homework assignments meant for revision; when questioned, she hadn't attempted any questions or reached out for help.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for exams became flustered under timed conditions and missed key marks on trigonometry because "she couldn't settle into an exam mindset."

These habits left gaps in understanding and undermined confidence during assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Marayong tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student, Alysse, who used to hesitate with financial maths—she recently achieved 95% on an assessment after practising new strategies and now tries different ways of factorising problems herself.

In Year 8, Hima moved from struggling with algebra to correctly answering almost every question in a challenging set, showing real persistence and focus during sessions.

Meanwhile, Michael in Year 2 has started reading sight words independently and now completes addition questions without needing help, finishing his worksheet by himself for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lalor Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marayong Heights Public School.
