The most important thing I can do for a student is to allow them to flourish in their academic pursuits and have them feel the same passion that I have in academics- instilling and inspiring in them a love of learning that will help them progress even in their professional careers. I am a very patient and caring tutor. I understand that there are…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is act as a motivation for them to achieve their personal best. Although raising marks is the main objective for tutors, they must be able to interact with the students and find their weak points and there is a limit to what they can teach. They must act as a pillar that can support their…

A tutor should always remember that their purpose is to help the student understand and love the subject and not do the work for them. They should try to help the student gain passion and curiosity for the concepts they learn. This will help them study and ace the subject. Furthermore, I believe that the most important thing a tutor should have…

In my view, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide personalized support by adapting to their individual learning needs, build their confidence through encouragement and positive reinforcement, and foster independent learning by teaching effective study strategies. An excellent tutor does more than just give answers; they also help students understand difficult ideas, adjust to their preferred learning method, and promote critical thinking. They help pupils become more self-assured, make studying interesting, and foster an environment where they feel free to ask questions. In order to guarantee that students…

To work with a happy and motivated student allows to improve and learn in a better way. That's why a good feeling with the child is very important. Making her/his problem as mine, I can reach a full engagement with her/him. The tutor must also show security, respect, motivation and passion. I can improve her/his skills for study in order to…

I believe a tutor can make all the difference to a student struggling with their studies. School teaching can often be mechanical and impersonal; an environment where some students find it difficult to learn. I know first hand that teaching in smaller groups or one-on-one works is much more effective at learning hard to grasp concepts. The impact…

Learning can be spilt into 3 parts. First being simply understanding the content without worrying about exams. Second being revising and coming up questions possible from the content and getting a deeper understanding. Third is looking at the exam questions and how to form the answer to get maximum marks. I am aware of different styles of learning…

The most important thing would be to be able to empathise with the student and be not just a tutor but also a mentor. Learning is just as much about building confidence and motivation as it is about acquiring knowledge and understanding. This means being optimistic even when things don't work out as envisioned, and expending extra effort to make…

To get them engaged and interested in a subject or topic. Although it is good to just teach the student how to pass the exam, I believe that by truly engaging and motivating a student they will get the most reward and the best results from their work. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is build a good relationship so the student feels confident and secure. While education is paramount, a student who feels unsafe or stressed is more likely to perform poorly and absorb less information, so I believe that being someone the student is comfortable around in turn leads to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence, not just help them get the answer. Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. Be a friend. This is how I was taught by my tutors and this is how I taught as well. If there is a deeper bond than that of just a student and teacher, the student really shines. The students open up more to the teacher. This helps the teacher to plan on how to help the student. I can understand what the student needs. I can connect with the…

Our girls love the tutor. There confidence in math is stronger
Esther, Marrickville

Inside MarrickvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia worked on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and completed a maths assessment to check understanding across key topics.

In Year 7, James practised index laws and simplifying expressions with like terms, using step-by-step examples for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Mia focused on calculating area and volume of 3D shapes as well as tackling multi-step worded questions involving both two- and three-dimensional figures.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student tended to rush through multiplication problems, leading to repeated small errors—"he made little mistakes with multiplication while trying to get through the maths work as quickly as possible."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student struggled with times tables and would often guess rather than calculate answers for division or fraction tasks.

In Year 7 English, a reluctance to argue from another perspective meant written responses were shorter and less developed.

During homework in Year 4, spelling activities left a student frustrated and distracted when difficult words slowed progress; unfinished sections remained at lesson's end.

Recent Achievements

A Marrickville tutor recently noticed that Sophie, a high school student, now independently works through mixed word problems in maths tests—last term she needed reminders for every step, but this week she finished 1.5 tests in the time needed for one and went back to check her answers without prompting.

Another win: Olivia, also in high school, has started fixing mistakes in her fraction calculations before writing them down, where previously she'd skip checking altogether.

In Year 4 English, Leon moved from short sentences to adding more detail on his own; last session he wrote four connected sentences with clear arguments about wisdom versus money.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library & History: Marrickville Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
