The most important things a tutor can do for a student is help them gain the tools necessary to be able to succeed on their own. As a tutor, helping students not only believe in themselves, but also helping them gain the strategies and tools to overcome difficult academic and non-academic problems is an important thing. Tutors need to not just…

In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

A tutor should make learning feel safe, achievable and enjoyable. The most important things are to build confidence, personalise the approach, set clear goals, and teach step-by-step strategies that students can use independently. Encouragement, consistency and strong communication with families are also essential for meaningful progress. My…

A tutor can make learning enjoyable by emphasising on the practical aspects and usage. It is also incumbent upon the tutor to help the student realise the difference learning brings in life and helps them make a responsible and better human being. Patience, friendliness and ability to make the child comfortable by not being a 'Tutor' in the…

A vital aspect of tutoring is being non-judgemental. it is important for a tutor to make the student feel comfortable to share if they do not understand something or are struggling. If a student feels as if they will be judged or considered inadequate they are less likely to come to tutor’s for help. Building a strong relationship is extremely…

Something that sets me apart from many other tutors is that I’m very relatable, something which I think is very important to a student. Personally, I’ve known in the past what it’s like to sometimes struggle academically, however, experience has shown me that part of it what it takes to succeed is a great work ethic and an awesome mentor.…

I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. I also think that it is important for tutors to create a comfortable learning environment for…

As a tutor you can provide a child/student with a different outlook on their learning. For example, their school teacher may have explained it in a way that the child didn't particularly understand, and as a tutor you can give them a more unique and individual learning experience that they wouldn't get at school. Providing children with one-on-one…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure that the student has gained the ability to consolidate the information taught. To encourage them to keep going and not give up, because it can get really upsetting to the student if they can't understand a specific thing after some time spent on it. I believe the most powerful way a tutor can aid a student is by giving them confidence. More than often, students can show more vulnerability in a one-on-one session than in a classroom surrounded by their peers, and so the best thing I can do is use these private sessions to impart confidence in the students by making them see ways they can…

A tutor is supposed to ensure learning and the growth of the students academic skills. Also to make sure their goals are strong enough for them to reach success in the future. Inside Norton SummitTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alyssia reviewed titrations in chemistry, focusing on molar ratios and rearranging equations like n = m/M and C = n/V, as well as galvanic cells and balancing redox equations for her exam.

In Year 10, Sam worked on sketching linear graphs by finding x- and y-intercepts using the gradient-intercept method, then practised identifying equations of lines through various methods including calculating gradients.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily revised univariate statistics by exploring mean, median, mode, range, and began working with interquartile range using sample data sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tended to rely on previous answer formats when solving algebra problems; as one tutor noted, "he looked back at old examples instead of working through new reasoning steps."

In a Year 12 chemistry session, the student was hesitant to attempt the written discussion portion of an assignment and avoided "thinking outside the box" when applying concepts in unfamiliar situations.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student was sometimes easily distracted during sessions, making it difficult to focus and set clear goals for what to cover next. This meant valuable lesson time was lost regaining focus or reviewing known methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Norton Summit noticed Alyssia, a senior student, moved from needing guidance on titration equations to independently solving even complex questions with mixed molar ratios by the end of her session.

Alessandro, in Year 10, showed a real shift—he now arrives knowing exactly which maths concepts he's struggling with and directs the session by asking focused questions rather than waiting passively.

Meanwhile, Lucy in Year 6 used to hesitate when facing new statistics topics but recently began tackling practice problems on her own once shown the method, showing more initiative with each session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Norton Summit Primary School.
