The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: 1. Build Confidence: Encouraging students and celebrating progress helps them believe in their abilities and approach learning with a growth mindset. 2. Adapt to Their Learning Style : Every student learns differently. A good tutor tailors their approach to match the student's…

I believe that personalisation is what sets apart a tutor from an effective teacher. Students should initially be analysed for their approach to questions, personal goals and grievances to adroitly construct a program for them to adapt to. Consistency can further this notion and assist the student in improving their grades. My Strengths as a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them feel pride in their own accomplishments. This is especially important in a subject like Math which can feel abstract to the point of developing anxieties and aversions towards it. Providing encouragement and celebrating progression not only motivates students to perform better,…

Far too often students fall into the trap of memorisation. They lack the conceptual understanding, thus when given a question that does not perfectly coincide with their rules, they panic. I strongly believe that as a tutor, my goal is to motivate students to really grasp concepts and truly appreciate the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of a rule or…

Teach them the methods and concepts, not answers. By doing so we are ensuring the students can solve any problem as they know how to. The tutors should adapt to the way the student learns, and change the way they teach if the student isn't understanding. Some of my strengths would include, being patient which I believe is important for a tutor…

I don't hope to replace the school teachers completely. However 1 to 1 and smaller group engagements would help put in a more personal touch that would minimize the weakness of the student, bring the best out of them and build character (patience, resilience, analytical thinking) to supplement them to succeed in their education journey Analytical…

I think the most important part of for a student to achieve their full potential whilst feeling confident with what they are learning. I believe I can help them feel…

Every student have different abilities and way of understanding things. It is very important for a tutor to understand these things so that it would be easy to convey knowledge to student in their preferred way. I believe the concepts of mathematics are not so mystical. According to me two most important principles in a tutor are patience and trust. Building trust makes the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, make mistakes. Having patience also goes a long way in building that trust, so that the student can actually enjoy the learning process. I believe I can bring value to the role through my…

Inside Pendle HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Rory worked on converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions, as well as adding and subtracting mixed numbers using step-by-step examples.

Year 8 student Jawad focused on spelling tricky words and expanded his understanding of place value and rounding through targeted exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Aaira practiced financial mathematics by calculating simple interest and began exploring compound interest problems to build confidence with real-world applications.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, a student often relied on written algorithms for multiplication and fractions, hesitating to use mental strategies—even when prompted.

"He tried to remember all the steps in his head but missed key details," noted one tutor during multi-step word problems.

In Year 10 Algebra, another student struggled with copying equations correctly from the board—sign errors crept in when notes were copied too quickly, making it hard to spot where solutions went wrong.

For both, not writing out working or checking answers led to repeated confusion and lost time untangling avoidable mistakes during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Pendle Hill recently observed a Year 8 student who previously struggled with time-based maths questions, but after targeted practice, managed to score full marks on a test—a notable turnaround from earlier in the term.

Another high schooler has become much more independent in algebra: instead of waiting for step-by-step guidance, she now identifies when to add or subtract roots herself and confidently substitutes values into equations without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who once hesitated to read aloud is now tackling challenging words like "rhythmic" and "competitiveness," showing clear improvement in pronunciation during sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wentworthville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Girraween Public School.
