Here are the key aspects that I consider to be the most important for a tutor: Individualized Support: Through personalized guidance, I aim to address specific challenges, reinforce strengths, and ensure a comprehensive understanding of the subject topics. Encouraging Critical Thinking: This involves asking thought-provoking questions and…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to build the student's confidence. Sometimes students may feel afraid to make mistakes even though in fact they know more than they think. A tutor should also keep encouraging the students to keep going even when it's tough. I think one of my strengths is being patient. I don't mind explaining…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be able to cater or do a teaching method that the student will learn the most while enjoying it. My strength as a tutor is my endless thirst for knowledge. This will allow me to enjoy learning new and better methods that would be the best method for tutoring for each…

My students always have so much fun in my classes. I think it is important, because when students are enjoying themselves in the learning process, it makes it so much easier to learn. That is why I feel it is so important to build an easy rapport with students in the beginning, making the student feel at ease, and comfortable, putting the student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence in learning. Beyond just solving problems or improving grades, my goal is to help students truly believe in their own abilities. Many students struggle not because they lack potential, but because they doubt themselves. I work to change that. By…

I think the key thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. I have found it extremely valuable to ensure students develop a solid work ethic and understand how they can study effectively. In this sense tutoring plays a supplementary role, ensuring…

I believe a tutor's role goes beyond helping students achieve good grades. A great tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, help them develop effective study habits and problem-solving skills, and build the confidence to learn independently. Ultimately, the goal is to equip students with skills…

The most crucial factors, in my opinion, are boosting the student's self-esteem, ensuring that they comprehend the material rather than merely memorizing it, and fostering an environment where they feel free to make mistakes. A good tutor not only helps with grades but also helps students develop problem-solving skills they can carry forward.…

I can build my students engagement with and appreciation of the subject (many students find school boring or purposeless and I make a point to spark more joy in learning by integrating key notes of relevance into every lesson). I will also assure students that it is okay not to understand something, or to feel unconfident. Struggling with…

Be their friend and role model. Students have already enough to deal with in school. They need someone to listen to them and help them to clarify all their doubts. In a nutshell, I think a tutor must be : --> A friend --> An academic trainer --> A mentor --> A planner As a tutor, i focus more on an overall development than just focusing on the…

I think most importantly, a tutor must create a good learning environment for their students. We've been through high school aswell and we've seen the ups and downs. So the best thing a tutor can do is be patient and supportive and build their confidence. Even if they get a question wrong or don't understand something, we should be patient and…

Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe they are capable. A lot of students have already decided they are bad at the subject, so rebuilding that confidence comes first. From there it is about helping them understand the thinking behind an answer, not just the answer itself. If they only memorise a method they…

Inside PetershamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on algebra word problems and probability, applying these skills to real-life scenarios.

In Year 4, Harry focused on solving multiplication questions and was introduced to number sequences for pattern recognition.

Meanwhile, Kyah (Year 6) revised perimeter concepts and practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres while reading maps for her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, a student's written work was often unclear, making it hard to trace errors and slowing progress in algebra. As one tutor noted, "the way she sets out her work will greatly improve her understanding and reduce errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on essays tended to overcomplicate arguments instead of building ideas step by step; this led to confusion mid-way through responses.

For a primary student in Year 4, loss of focus at the start of lessons meant new concepts like time or division took longer to grasp, even after warm-up activities.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Petersham noticed Emily now tells her tutor when she's stuck instead of staying quiet—last session, she worked through tricky area problems independently after asking for help.

Jason (Year 10) has started tackling unfamiliar maths questions on his own; although confused at first, he finished the lesson answering new concepts without support.

In Year 4, Zoe previously hesitated to participate but recently completed multiplication questions independently and stayed focused much longer than before. At the end of that lesson, she answered every problem on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petersham Public School.
