I think talking to the student and understanding their strengths, needs and personality is the most important thing I can do as a tutor. I believe that if a student enjoys their lesson, they learn the best. I believe that my ability to build good rapport, identify learner needs and personalize lessons for the student to enjoy stress-free learning…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to hear the opinions and struggles of a student. This will allow them to move forward and solve any issues that they are having with their studies. I am very patient and hardworking. I take my time with students, allowing them to ask questions. I also provide my own homework and help with…

I believe a tutor should be like a friend who explains things without judgment and is patient when a student is struggling. Sometimes students just need someone who will listen, encourage them, and explain a concept as many times as necessary until it makes sense. A good tutor helps students feel supported, builds their confidence, and teaches…

A tutor needs to help identify a student's strong points and motivate the students in every possible way. It's not always the tutor that should be valued and respected but the students also needs the same respect and care. Also, a tutor should know how to boost up the morale of a student when he/she is feeling low. If student is facing some…

I believe that in order for anyone to understand the material being taught - the tutor must begin with the fundamentals and basics; breaking down the information and then ensuring the student is able to explain it back is what I believe works best. This requires patience, which I believe is an essential quality a tutor must maintain in order for…

Give moral support and guidance. As a tutor, I don't give answers or solve the student's work, I want them to be able to solve it themselves and use their critical thinking skills with their knowledge of subject content. Subjects can be tough, as a tutor, I need to find ways to convey the same subject in an easier, convenient way to understand it.…

A tutor has to be patient and welcoming for their students. The reason these students come for tutoring is because they face difficulty keeping up with school. So they should be given the space to understand at their own pace, in their own method and a teacher needs to recognize that. We need to recognize the method which we choose to teach a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. A tutor must support their students throughout their learning journey and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can offer a child is patience. Impatience does not create a suitable learning environment. Qualities like these can prevent a child from wanting to learn, they may negatively associate with the subject, putting them further behind. Every child can succeed, given enough time. I think that a tutor must be patient and remain composed with each student. Besides, it is important to have an understanding of their best way of learning, and encourage them to question in their learning. Furthermore, awareness of their wellbeing…

I think spending time to change your whole approach of teaching because one of your student is unable to understand the whole content. Inside Salisbury SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Harry focused on adding and subtracting decimal numbers and completed a timed word problem test involving decimals.

Year 8 student Ava worked through collecting like terms in algebra, then moved to multiplying negative integers using practice questions from her homework.

For Year 10, Maya explored figurative language by analysing metaphors and similes within a Harlem Renaissance poem, with follow-up essay writing for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student's essay was well structured but noticeably short—homework time wasn't fully utilised, which limited depth.

In Year 9 algebra, as a tutor observed, "he skipped showing steps in working out," making it hard to spot calculation errors.

One Year 8 student repeatedly forgot to complete homework for several weeks, causing visible gaps when new concepts were introduced.

A Year 4 learner left several questions unfinished due to distraction and missed instructions; "gets off track easily" appeared more than once in the notes.

During online lessons, a senior student found distractions crept in, reducing focus during key practice on like terms.

Recent Achievements

One Salisbury South tutor saw a big shift in a Year 9 student's approach to maths: after struggling with negative integers, he now works through adding and subtracting them almost error-free and immediately picked up multiplying negatives—last session, he got just two homework questions wrong.

In English, a high schooler who previously missed figurative language cues is now independently spotting metaphors, similes, and even new examples like hyperbole and alliteration.

For a younger student, the tutor noted she now reads aloud without prompting and self-corrects when she notices mistakes—something she hesitated to do before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Salisbury Community Hub Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Keller Road Primary School.
