A tutor should be patient and never say something is easy. They should always encourage and find ways to explain something step-by-step such that everything is explained and can be linked back to a central idea. I am patient, friendly, and I can see and understand why something can be difficult to understand. I encourage and can relate to finding…

Being a medical student, I value how education builds an individual. Having the right mentors and teachers during one's educational journey can either make or break them. Students look up to their mentors and tutors for various reasons. Students already interact with teachers at school, so they require a friend who understands their problems and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is give a student confidence in a subject they once hated or were afraid of and using that confidence to help them learn. I think tutors should be understanding to help them in the best way that they can, like being there for your students, not as a crutch but as someone who can amplify their learning. Teaching students concepts and filling gaps in their knowledge and learning techniques helps them create a strong foundation, which will help them build their…

I guess that would be guiding them to make use of knowledge in real life situations by making connections between concepts and practice. By doing so, they learn something that is useful and could probably help them later in their lives. Inside SeatonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lily revised area and perimeter in maths and practised reading comprehension with factual articles.

Year 8 student Sarah focused on switching between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-life examples, then reviewed prime and composite numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Marcus tackled algebraic equations—including expanding and factorising—and worked through problems involving BEDMAS and the cartesian plane for revision ahead of his next assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student tended to avoid writing out working in algebra, preferring mental calculation; as a tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In a senior Maths session, one student confused area and volume formulae when tackling compound shape problems—this made it harder to spot where the extra dimension (height) was needed.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 learner sometimes relied on prompts rather than independently noting key observations in science reports, resulting in less detailed notes. This led to extra time spent revisiting concepts that could have been recorded more clearly during lessons.

Recent Achievements

A Seaton tutor recently noticed a Year 8 student who had always hesitated to speak up now comfortably asking for help when stuck, especially with new algebra problems—previously, she'd just guess and move on.

In a high school session, another student who'd struggled to organise his maths assignments began showing all working out and double-checking his answers independently before moving forward.

Meanwhile, a senior student tackling calculus was able not only to apply the product rule accurately but also talked through each step out loud, demonstrating clear understanding after needing lots of prompting in earlier lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverstone Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Seaton Park Primary School.
