I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be giving them motivation and support. As a tutor we can help build the students confidence in their academic abilities. We can also effectively equip students with valuable study skills that's applicable in all their future studies. Lastly, learning can be challenging, so as…

It is important to build a relationship with the student and to always guide them but not push them to their limits. It is also important that the student understands how its done, while having them memorise a pattern is easy, allowing them to understand how to solve these types of questions will allow them to apply their solution to more things.…

A good tutor can instill confidence, curiosity and independence in their student, so that they will want to learn and improve even when studying on their own. A good tutor also provides the necessary resources for their student, so that they are able to work on their weaknesses in their own time. A good tutor helps to improve on the student's…

I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

Support my students and give them the skills to excel in their education while also fulfilling their goals. This can mean different things for different students, so depending on the goals and needs of the students we can together curate a study plan for success. I think one extremely important thing a tutor can do is to adapt their teaching to the individual needs and abilities of each student, and adapt themselves to the student, not force the student to adapt to them. This involves listening to the student and observing how they work and then responding to those things. Another extremely important thing…

Being patient and understanding. At the beginning of my tutoring journey, I provided several private one on one tutoring sessions. Never push them and…

Personally, I believe that students come to tutors for a reason: commitment. Even though I am not an official school teacher, I try to make sure that students walk out of the tutoring session with a reasonable understanding of a particular topic, despite the fact that they might have learned about it at school already. I think it is necessary that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have patience. Understanding that each student is different and that it's necessary to adapt to their pace in order to achieve results. A tutor needs to have a good understanding of the content to help cater to the students' needs. By suggesting or providing different resources (e.g. alternative text books, handouts, video clips or study cards), the student can widen their methods of learning and access to resources. A tutor needs to be a relatable individual, who gets along…

Inside Shenton ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on converting between proper and improper fractions with denominators of 10, 100, and 1000, as well as placing decimals accurately on a number line.

In Year 8, Emily revised integers and negative numbers alongside substituting values into simple algebraic expressions.

For Year 9, Sam focused on factorisation techniques and applying the first three index laws to simplify algebraic terms.

Recent Challenges

Jacob did not attempt the homework set for him last lesson, especially in advanced algebra and index laws, which limited progress with new topics.

In Year 10 Physics, skipping written diagrams made abstract problems harder to visualise and led to confusion when tackling free body questions.

For a Year 6 learner, not writing out working for fraction and subtraction tasks meant errors went unnoticed and wasted time retracing steps.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student's messy approach to telling time on clock faces made it difficult to spot where understanding broke down during practice.

Recent Achievements

One Shenton Park tutor recently noticed a big shift with Jacob in Year 10 Maths: after struggling to remember each step, he started writing out his full working for index law problems, which helped him finish homework faster and more accurately than before.

A senior student who previously hesitated to sketch graphs can now confidently draw derivatives and explain how they relate to the original function—something that used to cause confusion.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, Pria has become much more proactive about telling her tutor which maths topics she finds tricky instead of guessing or staying quiet.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rosalie Primary School.
