A tutor can have a lasting impact on a student’s life, and one of the most important things they can do is empower students to become independent learners and develop a mindset of lifelong improvement and continuous growth. Beyond academic success, tutors can serve as mentors, helping students prepare for future challenges both in school and…

Understand how the student learns and tailor their teaching to suit the student and their needs. Make sure the student can actually understand the concepts being taught, rather than making them simply memorise the concepts. I believe I am patient, and I can break down complex theories and concepts into simplified versions that are easily…

Connecting to my previous points, I think the most important thing a tutor can do is instill self-belief in a student, teaching them how to do things on their own and giving them the confidence to try. I think I'm highly emotionally intelligent, perceptive, and patient, which helps me connect with students on a deeper level. I find that this…

One important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure communicating in a manner that motivates the student and makes them feel confident in the content they are learning. This could be by starting off with easier practice and gradually testing more of the student's abilities. This way, the student is able to warm-up with do-able questions…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to identify the areas of strengths and weaknesses in a student and help them to improve. Another crucial thing is to build a rapport with the students so that a tutor can get to know the students and their learning styles to be able to plan a lesson effectively.…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to genuinely care for the student. Because i feel when you care for the student it becomes very easy to build a rapport and teaching becomes more simple. I am a very adaptable person in general and i apply this in my tutoring as well. Every student is different and i think it is…

Making mistakes feel safe. If a student is afraid to get something wrong, they'll never actually engage with the material; they'll try to avoid being caught not knowing. The most important thing a tutor can do is create an environment where asking for help early feels like the smart move, not the embarrassing one. Because the longer you wait, the…

To be patient enough to see results. Lesson plannings are crucial for students to understand the flow of their subjects. I believe I am…

The first and foremost is being patient. Not everyone can learn and understand concepts at the same pace, so patience is very important. Allowing the students to display the knowledge they have learnt is important to ensure that they indeed have learnt. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to kindle in them a curiosity for the world around them and to guide them in looking for answers. In my opinion, the role of a tutor goes beyond simply imparting knowledge. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. Teachers are considered as one of the people who shape someone's future or career. Inside St KildaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Matthew focused on complex numbers—proving properties using geometric arguments—and also tackled advanced trial paper questions involving polynomials and mathematical induction.

Year 11 student Amisha worked through the quantum mechanical nature of atoms, applying the Rydberg equation to electron transitions, and practised solving problems on electromagnetic induction.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Will developed essay writing skills by planning comparative responses for Tracks and Into the Wild, with particular attention to analysing language use and connecting key themes such as individualism and materialism.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student often skipped showing full working in interest and credit card problems, which made it hard to catch repeated calculation errors; as noted, "small details were missed due to the habit of skimming over the question and jumping straight to the formula."

In senior English, incomplete homework and weak communication about missing work became an issue—one week, no prior notice was given that set tasks hadn't been attempted.

Exam responses also suffered from minimal essay planning, leading to answers drifting off-topic.

In Extension Maths, forgetting previous feedback meant similar mistakes kept resurfacing during timed proof questions.

Recent Achievements

One St Kilda tutor noticed that Will, a Year 12 English student, has begun to independently spot and explain his own writing errors—something he previously struggled with—and now takes initiative to backcheck his essays before submitting.

In another recent high school session, Amisha made a breakthrough in physics by correctly solving a projectile motion problem using methods she'd found confusing just weeks ago, and her improved test score reflected the shift.

Meanwhile, a younger student showed new engagement by describing themes for class novels out loud after previously being hesitant to share ideas during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yesodei HaTorah College.
