A tutor should always remember that their purpose is to help the student understand and love the subject and not do the work for them. They should try to help the student gain passion and curiosity for the concepts they learn. This will help them study and ace the subject. Furthermore, I believe that the most important thing a tutor should have…

Help students build a structured approach to problem-solving. Solutions can be found online, but it is important to cultivate the right starting point in students' minds, since it is an important skill to have at every level of study. Utmost patience is something I have honed, since I skipped a class when I was in school, and it took a lot of…

There could by many reasons why students come to tutoring: they're struggling to keep up, they want to excel or simply their parents want them to go. No matter the reason, what I think is most important for a tutor to do is to try and make the students actually interested in the content in front of them and then aid them as they grapple with it.…

There are many important things that a tutor can do for a student, one of which is regardless of our personal feelings, it is important that we should work with each of our student to ensure their success. Act like you are happy to be there and see them. The tutor should always be transparent and ready to work. Also, a tutor should always keep up…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and offer consistent support. A good tutor helps a student feel heard, respected, and capable. Beyond just teaching academic content, I believe it’s about empowering students — making sure they know their struggles are valid and that improvement is always possible. Tutors should guide,…

I believe the most important aspects of tutoring is to provide a safe and positive learning environment in which a student can be made to feel comfortable and at ease in querying any gaps in understanding they may have. The important things a tutor can do for their students include making the subject enjoyable and empowering students to reach a point from where they can arrive at solutions on their own. The first and foremost task for tutors is to make the subject more enjoyable than what the students perceive it to be. Once the students start enjoying the…

I believe empowerment is one single most important aspects a tutor can bring to a student's live. I have oftentimes seen students who are lost and have almost given up on their desire to learn a new topic. In these situations, it is crucial to approach such students with a massive smile on your face and listen to their issues and expectations in…

In my opinion the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them reach their goals. Whether that may be to help them catch up in certain subjects, to reach for top marks for their desired high school or university or in need of motivation to study in creating habits. I believe that the most important thing will be for the tutor…

Undoubtedly, the primary focus of a tutor is to be patient with their students. All respective students are different from one another. Which also means they learn differently. A tutor should focus on building both understanding and confidence. That includes breaking down difficult concepts, being patient, and adapting to the student’s learning style. I also think it’s important to encourage problem-solving skills so the student becomes more independent over time, rather than relying on the tutor. I think one of my…

I think most importantly, a tutor must create a good learning environment for their students. We've been through high school aswell and we've seen the ups and downs. I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. As a tutor, it is important that you pass on the right knowledge to the student. Make them think about things by themselves instead of giving them straight away. Inside The RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Maya worked on plotting graphs and identifying x- and y-intercepts, as well as understanding linear relationships through visual examples.

Year 10 student Alex focused on solving advanced trigonometry questions from a recent test and reviewed polynomials in chapter 22b.1 for deeper algebraic skills.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily practiced expanding and factorising quadratic expressions before tackling worded problems involving algebraic fractions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student needed frequent reminders to finish written DI work and left parts of assignments incomplete, which led to confusion during revision.

In Year 11 English, reluctant to explain effect on audience and often did not link back to topic sentence, making it hard for ideas to develop into full arguments.

A Year 9 learner forgot key steps in long division and avoided double-checking, so errors persisted across sessions.

Another senior student was not fully prepared for the test on domain and range—missing notes meant time was spent re-learning rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One tutor in The Rocks noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples but now solves algebraic fraction problems independently, showing real independence.

A Year 12 student, after struggling to organise her ideas, managed to write a detailed speech plan unprompted—something she'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was hesitant to ask for help has started putting her hand up when stuck and recently read an entire short paragraph aloud with only one prompt for support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre.
