Be supportive and patient understanding everyone learns at a different pace and ways. Also, acknowledging that some content is more difficult than others to some people and that is fine. Just to ensure the student that it is ok to struggle with certain things, we all do at the end of the day. I adapt easily. I always study my student so I can…

The most important thing for a tutor is to be a role model. A tutor should possess enough knowledge and patience to help teach students not just the subject but also habits that pave way for a better life. I believe my patience as a tutor is the most important. I love to teach in different ways in order to help students understand and learn…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are assisting them with their studies and provide comfort. I do not think tutors should spoon-feed answers to students as that will not help them fully understand and learn. Other than that, I believe the ability to comfort and reassure students is extremely important for tutors. I have met…

My strengths are patience, clear communication, and the ability to break down complex ideas into simple steps. I also adapt…

I believe striking a balance in how the tutor interacts with a student is key. Being able to listen and identify a student's problem areas, as well as being firm enough to hold their attention is vital. A good tutor can set expectations tailored to a student's abilities and with them raise them while boosting their confidence. Overall personality…

A tutor plays a pretty significant role in a student's life. As a tutor, I can try my best to impart as much knowledge as I can to my students. I can provide them with the best of my capabilities right from being punctual, right on time and not only completing the course but also offering a good number of revisions. My strengths as a tutor are as…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and self trust, as this often leads to improved performance. I make lessons engaging by involving students in each step, encouraging questions and critical thinking, and emphasising both independent learning and problem solving. I also give students breaks when…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them skills they can use in life. It's not just about teaching them how to do a single problem, it's how to solve problems down the track. It's also about giving them the confidence in themselves, being confident means they will be less stressed and be able to do their best…

I have always had a knack for providing a new and creative approach to a challenging problem. I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

Most importantly, I think a tutor can demonstrate and guide a student on how to best deal with the frustration and adversity that comes their way. Frustration is a common effect of learning anything and if you're not equipped to overcome it, you may struggle a lot more than you need to and you may also be more likely to give up prematurely. I…

I believe the ability to be adaptable and always open to changing one's teaching methods to suit a student's learning style is key to an effective student-teacher relationship. In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

If you ask me, simplifying the concepts is the major task for a tutor. Just not the concepts but individual attention to the weaknesses and elimination of the same is a must to be a good tutor. Simplification of concepts and integration of the concept with real-world problems so that the learner could relate and understand the application of the…

I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. Confidence! Making children feel safe and confident is the most important thing a tutor can do for students. Very easy to deal with. Lots of great tutors and they go to great lengths to match the right tutor to the students needs. If for any reason the tutor selected does not 'fit' with the students requirements, Ezymath are more than happy to keep trying alternate tutors until they find the right match.
TONY MCCORMACK, Toorak

Inside ToorakTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Raef worked through dividing large numbers by 8 using a breakdown strategy, compared fractions and decimals, and solved number pattern problems in his maths homework.

Year 8 student Lucette focused on surface area calculations as well as angles, trigonometry, and Pythagoras' theorem, tackling practice questions to reinforce understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Maya practiced solving linear equations and inequalities along with simplifying algebraic expressions using index laws.

Recent Challenges

A Year 5 student hesitated to write out full working for maths problems, saying "I can do this in my head," which led to missed details—especially in multi-step word questions.

During a Year 8 algebra session, work was messy and unstructured; the tutor noted that "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

One Year 10 student did not complete homework before the lesson and struggled to recall last week's concepts, making it harder to tackle new material.

In another instance, a senior student forgot formulas due to scattered notes and weak organization. This left her searching for basics instead of building on them.

Recent Achievements

In a recent Toorak tutoring session, a Year 8 student who used to freeze up with linear equations began working through problems without hesitation, even explaining his logic aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student—who'd often skip checking her answers—took the initiative to review and correct every question on her latest maths test, catching errors herself for the first time.

For a younger learner in Year 3, games and flashcards have transformed times tables from anxiety into something he looks forward to; last week, he confidently tackled division questions that once made him nervous.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prahran / Windsor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Geelong Grammar School - Toorak campus.
