Drawing from my experience in teaching as a CSR activity, I recognize several essential aspects that I consider crucial in nurturing a student's growth and learning journey. 1. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to build both understanding and confidence in a student. While improving academic performance is important, students learn best when they feel supported and capable. A good tutor should explain concepts clearly, adapt to each student’s learning style, and create a safe environment where…

The most important thing that a tutor must do is form a genuine connection with the student based on trust and integrity. This can be achieved through humour, motivation and sharing likes/dislikes. This allows for long-term teaching because of a comfortable environment allowing the student to perform to the best of their ability. My questioning…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. Inside TurrellaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Grace practised converting decimals to percentages and vice versa, and also worked on calculating mean, mode, median, and range.

For Year 10, Thomas focused on factorising quadratic expressions (both monic and non-monic) using the PSF method and solved equations by completing the square and applying the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Grace analysed T.S. Eliot's poetry for Module B, refined essay structures for English Advanced, and practised unpacking essay questions to develop stronger thesis statements.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student hesitated to attempt harder algebra problems without textbook guidance—"needs more tries on more multiplication problems," a tutor noted—resulting in repeated practice of only familiar types.

For a senior student in Advanced English, feedback was often unaddressed between drafts; ideas discussed aloud were rarely incorporated into written essays, and her arguments leaned heavily on repeating class-taught terms rather than building with specific examples from texts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner struggled to follow sentences line by line in reading tasks and skipped back-checking answers aloud, which made sequencing steps in worded math problems even more challenging during sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Turrella tutor noticed one Year 11 student who used to struggle with linking feedback to her writing now revises full essay drafts independently, making targeted changes for clarity and detail.

In Year 9 maths, a student who was hesitant with mean, mode, and median recently solved data questions without prompting and tackled converting decimals to percentages confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously guessed at unfamiliar words has started pausing to sound them out before reading on—showing more patience and self-correction than before. Last session, she read the next chapter out loud with minimal help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Arncliffe Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Arncliffe West Infants School.
