The most important thing that a tutor can do is to stay positive and encouraging. If the tutor possesses these qualities, then the student will stay motivated and positive too, and will want to continue learning. As a high academic achiever, I strive to teach new students and help them to achieve their academic goals. I am motivated to give…

Primarily would be encouragement given how stressful year 12 can be, students need support. Additionally, understanding and patience will I was a house captain at my school, which meant working with much younger students to foster participation and encouragement, which I could provide as a tutor. Further, my general interest in maths and…

To make learning fun by offering different ways to explain concepts, getting to know the student's individual learning style, and emphasizing their strengths so they remain motivated. Additionally, helping them be organised and supported so that they do not get stressed and overwhelmed which can reduce enjoyment of and performance at school. My…

I consider the most important role of a tutor is to grow students confidence in subjects via encouragement. In order to strengthen students knowledge and abilities, a tutor should ensure that the student believes they can improve their understanding of a subject and trusts that their extra effort does pay off. Hence, by creating an environment…

To give students close attention to what areas of study they are struggling with and to find the solutions in the most effective way for each student. As a tutor, I always ensure to make students feel comfortable so that they can ask me questions during the lesson by having general conversations and try to be friends with them rather than being a…

Its good to be able to use a formula or understand how mathematical theories work but if you do not understand the fundamental blocks of which that concept is built on you will not be getting very far. Thats why I believe in not only understanding what a formula does but why it works. My ability to find where the problem is in a student and…

Not to critic harshly. I believe you should praise on a student's try and highlight what portion of their "solution" was done right, but then with a gentle tone, explain what portion they did wrong. If you lower a student's motivation, they're less likely to be ambitious to learn and try. Furthermore, a tutor should insist on their student(s)…

Help them learn content on their own rather than relying on the tutor so the student is more confident applying this knowledge on their own. As a tutor, one of my strengths is that I like to allow the student to attempt the problem on their own first before telling them how to do…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to be available for them, not just during tutoring sessions. This includes providing a range of different resources and being open for them to contact you out of hours for extra feedback. I think it's important for tutors to be there for their students as many students tend to…

I believe that doing the work with the student instead of doing the work for the student is vital for consolidating their learning. Being patent with the process of learning is likely to also be highly important. I take the perspective of the person I am tutoring into consideration. The most important thing a tutor can do is understand the student and make them feel heard. When a tutor builds a strong connection, they can tailor lessons to fit the student’s learning style, making concepts easier to grasp. Rather than being an authority figure, a tutor should act as a supportive guide, creating a safe space where students…

the most important thing is for the tutor to teach how the student best learns. We are not in large class rooms, so we have the luxury, to teach in specific ways, that might only be good for that one student. I'm patient and can therefore spend as much time as the student needs on any given topic. I'm thorough, so I make sure there are no…

Inside Watsons CreekTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4: Shaan practiced for upcoming tests, focusing on spelling and punctuation through initial assessments.

Year 7: Noah reviewed algebra examples from school that hadn't been covered previously and worked on angle relationships using diagrams.

Year 8: Zara tackled linear equations by stepping through practice test problems, then moved on to angles in triangles with targeted revision questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was often tripped up by worded maths problems, as the tutor noted: "He missed that some questions actually had two parts and stopped after the first."

In Year 10, a student struggled to keep track of signs in algebraic equations—missing negatives meant the method looked correct but answers were off.

A senior (Year 11) test saw time pressure result in skipped steps and lost marks.

Meanwhile, one primary student's inconsistent use of tense and missing commas made English writing hard to follow, with ideas running together on the page.

Recent Achievements

One Watsons Creek tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—this week, she flagged confusing algebra steps right away and worked through mistakes until she could solve most equations without prompting.

In a Year 7 session, a student who'd struggled with spelling began catching his own errors in homework, correctly inferring spellings he wasn't sure about.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student demonstrated real growth by writing a creative paragraph with improved spelling and sentence structure compared to last month's work, then volunteered to read it aloud at the end of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarra Glen Reading Room—or at your child's school (with permission), like Panton Hill Primary School.
