I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is be understanding. The students require empathy and patience in order to feel heard and comfortable asking for and receiving help. The tutor must also be able to slightly adapt their teaching ways, tailored towards each individual student to target their learning methods. I…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a space where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Learning can be frustrating at times, so it is really important to be encouraging and supportive. A good tutor does not just help with the content - they help build the student's confidence. It is…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

I think to be able to cater to each sutdent individually is the most important thing a tutor can do. Each student learns and processes information differently. By understanding this the tutor can adapt their teaching style to suit that of the student. I think my experience in my job and as a student now studying teaching, I have the skills to be a…

Tutors need to be patient, not every student is equally as smart, or equally as attentive. You have to find a balance. A great example I think would be is planting a seed. After you put the seed in the ground, you can put all the water in the world, but it's not gonna grow into a tree in just one day, just like a student, you will break the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is constantly support them and provide them with positive reinforcement because if they are to lose motivation then they will not fully apply themselves and strive to learn more. So I believe that even for minor achievements students must be congratulated and encouraged to further improve their…

A tutor plays a crucial role in shaping the moral values and basic manners of a student's life. Although tutoring primarily focuses on academics, I believe that tutors can significantly influence a student's overall development. Rather than treating the class as a whole, a tutor should give individual attention to each student, understanding their…

Apart from academics, a tutor plays a crucial role in shaping a student's life. It is important to encourage students to strive for excellence, take on responsibilities, and assist those in need. Building their confidence and guiding them in these areas helps develop their character and prepares them for future challenges. I concentrate on each…

The most important thing is to teach students how to think and solve problems independently, while also giving them confidence and structure. Inside White Gum ValleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sam worked on multiplication and division using the 4 times table, as well as telling time to the nearest quarter hour.

Year 8 student Mia focused on prime factorisation and calculating the lowest common multiple (LCM) of two numbers, using factor trees for clarity.

For Year 10, Alex tackled solving quadratics and identifying turning points, alongside practice with modelling real-world scenarios using quadratic equations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student showed reluctance to admit gaps in understanding trigonometric functions, making it difficult to address misconceptions—she still has trouble a) admitting that she has a gap in her knowledge and b) understanding fundamentally what trig functions are and do.

In Year 8 algebra, missing note-taking during online lessons meant confusion lingered when evaluating angles with variables.

A Year 5 student experienced ongoing challenges recalling rules for divisibility and prime factorisation, which slowed progress during complex number tasks.

Each moment of hesitation or skipped feedback led to time spent circling the same problems instead of building new confidence.

Recent Achievements

One White Gum Valley tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated with indices now confidently applies index laws and even tackles standard form questions independently.

In Year 7, another student who used to rush through maths is now consistently talking aloud during problem-solving, carefully setting out each step—successfully factorising more complex problems as a result of this shift.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 3 has started double-checking subtraction answers by reversing the calculation, showing real initiative after often skipping this step before. Last week, she finished all ten problems without needing any prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Fremantle: Fremantle Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fremantle College.
