I think helping students understand how to approach a question and learning how to discipline themselves is the most important. Constantly reminding them to complete their homework so we can go over their mistakes next time is also important in establishing a routine and will hopefully give them an incentive to do the same with school. I believe I…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are help them understand what they didn't understand in class by answering questions, guiding them in doing homework, or assignments. A tutor also helps students supplement their knowledge of subjects so that they can confidently and motivated study at school and take their exams. I…

From my perspective, a tutor is also a teacher as we teach and deliver knowledge to students. Each student sits at a different level, which requires different tutoring method and approaches. Understanding is key in tutoring as adequate assistance would help a student to achieve their best potentials. Secondly, we as tutoring should make students…

Therefore, it's crucial for a tutor to understand and align with each student’s unique learning objectives. Personalizing teaching methods to cater to individual needs and learning…

I believe the most important thing a tutor may do is to grow the student's confidence. Letting them know they can do better than what they are doing, discovering their maximum potential. I think one of my biggest strengths as a tutor is that I’m patient. I understand that everyone learns at a different pace, and I don’t get frustrated if…

Personalisation. In a classroom, the teacher's attention is divided and the material needs to be taught in ways that the majority understands. However, each student understands and learns differently so having it taylored to the individual (figuring out what they know, what they don't know and what they misunderstood) builds the foundation of…

I believe a tutor's role is to help students truly understand what they're learning, build their confidence, and develop skills they can use beyond the classroom. I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be fully committed to them while fully giving the student their attention while teaching. To be a good tutor, I feel like you need to be personally connected with your students. Each student has their own unique situation whether it be family or academic and as a tutor, you must be able to work with what your students have. After all, I believe that is the role of a tutor; to help students build upon what they have and then help them…

The most important thing a tutor can do is make the student passionate about their subject. If the student isn't motivated to learn, no amount of lecturing or assignments will help them. There are so many small things about each subject that are super interesting to learn about, but without the right tutor some students miss out. As a young tutor…

An exceptional tutor would ensure their students have an in-depth understanding of concepts by altering their teaching methods to best complement the student's learning capacity and to the material being taught. Inside Wiley ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on identifying and simplifying ratios, as well as writing equivalent ratios using practical examples.

In Year 8, Noah worked through scale drawings by applying unit conversions for length and distance in worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah reviewed half-yearly exam topics such as operations with fractions, decimals, and percentages, including their application to financial questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left working out incomplete, especially units in ratio and geometry questions, leading to lost marks—"she needs to develop the habit of writing FULL working out, including all units," as one tutor observed.

In a Year 9 algebra session, she relied heavily on calculators for fraction and percentage conversions instead of practicing by hand, which slowed her confidence with mixed exam questions.

During primary revision, a student skipped over worded multiplication problems without breaking them down into steps or checking their layout; this made it hard to spot mistakes before moving on.

In high school sessions, not creating summary notes or revisiting foundational skills before exams meant she guessed answers under pressure and forgot key processes after breaks.

Recent Achievements

A Wiley Park tutor noticed a big shift in one high school student's approach to assessments—after usually waiting until the last minute, she began working on her logbook and portfolio the same day they were assigned, bringing creative ideas to her project.

Another high schooler who previously hesitated with "hard" ratio problems now completes similar questions independently after just a brief explanation.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to struggle when subtracting smaller numbers from larger ones is now confidently using borrowing without prompting, finishing subtraction exercises with no errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lakemba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lakemba Public School.
