Being both supportive and empathetic are important. Encouraging a student and not making a huge deal about mistakes while congratulating correct responses builds a student's self-confidence which makes them perform better overall and develop a liking for the subject. Also, being understanding when the student struggles to perform when facing more…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to enrich their understanding and reinvigorate or catalyze a passion in a particular subject. Nowadays, a student's passion for a particular subject dwindles as they go further and further into their high school career. This may be due to external factors such as pressure or…

Giving motivation, goals and direction. I always loved tutors who could give me a purpose to life on top of knowledge of school content. I've always been in the tutoring scene back when I was in primary and all throughout high school. I know what kids want in a tutor and I will try my best to meet them. I have exceptional interpersonal skills and…

Although high results is a must, tutors should also respect or accept what students may want to gain out of their HSC marks. We cannot force students to learn but making the content more interesting will help motivate those who struggle to grasp the concept. The key point is that after every session, the student can leave knowing that they have…

I think the most important thing a tutor can offer to a younger student is their experience, similar to that of a mentor. Beyond course content, tutors can draw from their study, career and life experiences to help the student navigate their path. I am proud of my ability to teach and explain concepts to others effectively and thoroughly, which I…

Be honest. It is very important for a tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. Therefore, the language should always be clear and clean. My strength as a tutor is that I can impart the concept in a very understandable manner using different aides (visual etc.). I make sure…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do to assist a student is to understand that every individual has there own way of learning and that it is the tutor's role to adapt to the student to form personalised explanations and learning plans. Additionally, a tutor should take responsibility to maintain a good command of the subject area…

Listen, for a student to learn they ask questions and it’s important for a tutor to be able to listen and respond. I think my strengths are in my patience and empathy. Being friendly and adapting their teaching speed to the pace of the student. not having one universal teaching style, but altering it is how you keep the student interested and make it easier for them to grasp the concept. For example, using sports examples to explain a physics concept to a high school athlete will keep them engaged longer and add…

Just being a support for the student in question. Now, obviously, the first idea to jump to there is academically, and this is super important, of course, but also school is a naturally difficult time for a lot of students for a large variety of reasons, and even if the tutor nor student realize it, being there to help dealing with it is a massive…

I think the most important thing a tutor should do is educate student such that they enjoy learning new content. To do this, a tutor must deliver his knowledge in an engaging, enthusiastic way. Personally, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure that the student leaves without any questions. Inside YennoraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Alex practised counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s as well as tackling simple addition problems above 10.

In Year 9, Mia worked through linear equations and inequalities, focusing on graphing lines and interpreting solutions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jayden explored trigonometry topics including bearings and directions, using exact values with trig ratios to solve application questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Mathematics, one student's tendency to rely on a calculator for basic arithmetic slowed their progress with fractions—"she reached for the calculator even on single-digit sums," as noted.

A Year 10 student often left working out messy or incomplete during algebraic problem solving, which led to confusion and repeated errors when reviewing homework.

In Senior Mathematics, several students only practiced familiar question types in revision sessions, avoiding more challenging "word-dense" probability and surds problems; this meant they missed exposure to complex exam-style tasks.

Missed opportunities to use feedback or self-correct resulted in persistent misunderstandings.

Recent Achievements

One Yennora tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who had previously hesitated to use her calculator now reaching for it confidently when tackling more complex algebraic questions, showing new independence in problem-solving.

In another high school session, a student who used to struggle with linear equations began working through simultaneous equations without prompting, asking the tutor to check only their final answers rather than every step.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student was able to read aloud fluidly using their finger as a guide—a small but important change after earlier difficulties keeping track on the page—culminating in them finishing an entire chapter without losing their place.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yennora Public School.
