    Year 5 English Tutoring

In year 5, students are introduced to the idea that the meanings and spelling of words change over time. They consider how the starting point of a sentence indicates what is to follow. In grammar, students focus on the difference between main and subordinate clauses and how noun and adjective groups can help provide a fuller description. At this year level, students not only present their own point of view, they also reflect on the viewpoints of others. In writing, they move into fantasy settings and experiment with stylistic features used by particular authors. Students begin to edit others’ work based on a set criteria.
The core contents of year 5 English are:

    • The starting point of a sentence is used to signal what is coming next,
    • The difference between main and subordinate clauses,
    • Aiming for precision in writing by considering vocabulary,
    • Noun and adjective groups can be used to provide more description,
    • Creating literary texts that use realistic and fantasy settings, and experimenting with styles used by certain authors,
    • Planning and publishing imaginative, informative, and persuasive texts using print and digital resources.

In year 5, some students have difficulty forming compound sentences correctly. Another stumbling block is incorporating noun and adjective groups in writing to create richer and more precise descriptions.
By the end of year 5 English, students should be able to:

    • Understand how the interpretation of a text can be influenced by language features, images, and vocabulary,
    • Use information, ideas, and images from a variety of resources to develop and explain a point of view,
    • Create different texts for varying audiences and purposes,
    • Edit their work to improve organisation and meaning, and use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Being able to form a point of view using information from various sources, writing different types of texts for different purposes and audiences, and being able to edit their own work are all important in year 5 English.
Effective editing of their own work is one area that a tutor can help your child with. Showing your child the process of proofreading, editing, and rewriting will equip your child with the skills needed to do this on their own.
Students can find editing and rewriting discouraging as they may feel that it was only required because their first draft was not good enough. Understanding that editing and rewriting are normal parts of the writing process and that they need to be factored in to the finished product is important for your child’s emerging writing skills.
Even though your child may be a fluent reader by this age, it is still beneficial to read aloud to your child on a regular basis. This allows your child not only to enjoy the activity of reading together but also gives them the chance to access books that they may find difficult to read or understand on their own. Reading to your child broadens the types of books your child will have exposure to along with being introduced to new information and concepts and an extended vocabulary.
