    Year 12 English Tutoring

In year 12, when comparing texts students look at how themes and ideas are represented. They study the relationships between language and genre, and compare texts within the same genre as well as from different genres. There is a closer look at how content, structure and voice of a text are related to its context. Students engage with the values in texts and develop their own interpretations in response.
The core contents of year 12 English are:

    • Comparing texts from similar and different genres,
    • Creating various texts by considering language features, purpose, context, audiences, personal voice, and point of view,
    • Examining relationships between texts and contexts,
    • Evaluating perspectives and values found in texts and how these are presented,
    • Reflecting on the student’s own and others’ texts.

One area where students can fall short is in language analysis. It is not enough to simply identify and summarise persuasive language techniques present in a text. In order to achieve a high grade, students need to discuss how language techniques are used to persuade and this is where some students struggle.
By the end of year 12 English, students should be able to:

    • Understand the relationships between texts, genres, and contexts,
    • Understand how interpretations of texts can be affected by the content, structure, voice and perspective,
    • Compare different interpretations of texts to their own responses,
    • Create written and mixed media texts in different styles, mediums, and forms.

Knowing that there can be multiple interpretations of texts, being able to explain how interpretations can be affected by not only the content but also the structure and voice of the text, and being able to write texts in different forms are central to year 12 English.
A tutor can help your child become familiar with grading criteria so that work is completed with reference to the criteria. In year 12, it is essential that your child is well aware of what examiners are looking for in order to achieve the best possible grade. A tutor can work with your child to practise meeting the highest achievement criteria.
It is all too easy to assume that one’s standard of work is “good enough”. In year 12, the challenge is to continue to look for areas requiring improvement and to practice assessment style tasks as much as possible. At the same time, students should be reassured that as long as they work with reference to the grading criteria, they are capable of achieving their best result.
Encourage your child to practise assessment tasks under test conditions. Talk to your child about pacing themselves during trial exams. Also, when using the internet for research, ensure your child uses his/her time effectively and is aware of the difference between useful and irrelevant information. Ask your child to summarise his/her research and to note sources as they go along to avoid plagiarism.
