Instil confidence, teach problem solving and critical thinking that can be applied across all academic areas, and encourage resilience when students are struggling, reiterating that it is okay to not understand straight away and that persisting is the most important thing. The most important thing a tutor can do is be a fantastic role model for their students, inspiring them not just academically but also in life. They can help students develop important skills like time management and perseverance through their own experiences. Tutors are great resources for advice on both schoolwork and personal challenges. Being a teacher, it's his/her duty to make the student understand any concept accurately with an ease and with great patience. It is not right to shout or get angry on any person if he or she is not able to do any thing, all you need is some time and practice and also some tricks to solve any problem. I am a very patient person and work with full…

I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can provide…

Making sure that the learning content is tailored to the needs of the child. Children with special needs require extra support and compassion. Helping them complete their work is part of the job. However, the most important thing is making sure students are relaxed. If they are getting overwhelmed they shouldn't be pushed because then it'll make them feel like they can't do it. So tackling their weaknesses at a realistic pace will help them not feel pressured to understand straight away.…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I can sympathise with the students in terms of…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

I would like to answer this question from the student’s point of view. It’s not important for the tutor to know each and everything but what is important is that if the student is unable to understand a topic and the tutor is also not aware of it, it’s his/her responsibility to give that student the assurance that he/she will try to solve it…

Inside AlbionTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Amber practised converting between kilograms, grams, and other units, along with long division and understanding place value.

In Year 10, Liam focused on surface area problems from Chapter 6D and E and also reviewed key trigonometry applications for non-right-angled triangles using exam prep questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel worked through anti-differentiation and differentiation concepts for his assignment, as well as tackled graphing sinusoidal functions like cosine and sine from Chapter 5.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on piece-wise functions needed extra practice breaking down complex, multi-step problems; as a tutor noted, "figuring out areas of tricky shapes required careful reading to avoid missing key details."

In Year 9, there was confusion converting units and identifying which formula applied in surface area tasks, sometimes leading to skipped sides or misapplied calculations.

For a Year 4 student, not knowing times tables made it difficult to attempt multiplication questions—"she couldn't do much multiplication practice since she doesn't know the times tables of any numbers yet," wrote one tutor. This slowed progress through longer division and multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Albion tutor noted a high school student who, after weeks of confusion with trigonometric functions, independently calculated B and C values for sine and cosine graphs—a real shift from needing step-by-step prompts.

Another secondary student, previously hesitant to tackle complex worded problems, started breaking down multi-step surface area questions on her own and explained her reasoning aloud without waiting for reassurance.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who would often guess at answers now double-checks his working when converting decimals to fractions and consistently arranges numbers in order before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hamilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's Anglican Girls School.
