I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be very clear and not convoluted when explaining topics, equations, etc. to students, as it can be very easy to get intimated as a student and end up confused. I believe it is also important not to assume any knowledge straight away from students but to intentionally ask what it is that they…

Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. However, it is important for the tutor to recognize this and invite the student into the circle of discussion and let them contribute. It is crucial to create a safe space that is…

A tutor should provide a student with additional resources; have a positive, encouraging attitude and make sure to be understanding of the student's needs. The tutor should also be able to lift the student's confidence, as sometimes this can make all the difference. I am a patient, reliable, organised individual and I am willing to help students,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient and adapt to their learning style. Not everyone learns the same way, with the same words or at the same time. It is of utmost importance to showcase your belief in them and empower them to enjoy what they are studying and not just do it for the sake of school but do it for…

Above all else, I believe a tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership of their…

In addition to inculcating academic knowledge in students, a tutor can help students become more passionate towards a subject and can enable the student to grow as a holistic individual by providing moral support and mentorship for the student and helping the student grow in his/her values. As a student myself, I understand why students find some maths or chemistry concepts very difficult and many of them struggled when faced with homework or exam problems related to it. Teach students HOW to learn in future. Give them techniques to implement into their everyday school routine that will, in the long run, benefit their understanding. I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to keep the student engaged. Often students in tutoring are behind in work because they lose focus in a classroom or simply find it boring. Being able to hone a student's attention to the work will dramatically improve their chances of success. I can often work with different learning styles,…

I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

I know what its like to feel lost and anxious about academics. I have been demoted to the bottom class, twice in my school years and it would be selfish of me not to share how I overcame my own insecurities with others on a similar path. Inside ApplecrossTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack practised calculating area, length, and perimeter of shapes and worked through times tables for improved recall.

In Year 8, Ava explored linear equations before starting an investigation on parabolas, then compared pie charts with introductory algebra to build confidence in interpreting data.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student reviewed test material covering measurements and percentages alongside calculations with equations and matrices, focusing on efficient problem-solving methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working on matrices and data interpretation left several homework tasks incomplete, as noted: "didn't do homework," which meant less opportunity to clarify errors with mean, mode, and median.

In Year 8 algebra, test planning issues led to only 42% on a problem-solving assessment—time was spent re-checking calculations instead of moving forward.

A Year 4 student preparing for word problems often avoided writing out workings for subtraction and multiplication, erasing repeatedly when answers felt imperfect. In the moment, this made reviewing strategies difficult and slowed overall progress during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Applecross tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to guess on statistics questions now carefully checks for the right graph—she can clearly explain when to use histograms versus box-and-whisker plots, which was a real sticking point before.

A Year 9 boy, after weeks of confusing mode and median, started pausing to double-check which measure fits each question, instead of rushing ahead and mixing them up.

In a younger session, a Year 4 girl who once hesitated with multi-digit addition solved two- and three-digit word problems independently and asked for more challenging sums at the end.
