I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is basically inspiring them to grow a sense of a passion for Mathematics. I believe the right role model can help the student put more effort into the subject, working hard to get where they aspire to be and simply just being a friend as well as a tutor for the student. I would say…

I believe fully supporting students throughout their learning journey, especially when concepts feel frustrating or overwhelming. Providing consistent encouragement and reassurance helps students stay motivated and build resilience. It is also important to recognise that personal challenges can sometimes affect academic performance, so checking in…

The most important thing I can do as a tutor is meet every student where they are. That means truly listening to them, understanding what they already know, and empowering them to vocalize their own thought process because when a student can articulate their thinking, real learning begins. Rather than lecturing, I guide. I help students connect…

I think the most important goal as a tutor is to create a positive environment for a student. Being patient, understanding and maintaining a positive attitude has a wide array of benefits, including learning. Second to this is the ability to help a student gain an instinctive understanding of the concept manner. More than just helping with…

A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. I like to address the doubts of students and solve them immediately. I also frequently ask them if they've got any further questions and I keep…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to be patient, and to help the student learn to learn. It is an easier job to tell a student the correct answers than to help them understand how to get there. Taking the time to ensure a student truly understands each lesson and correction can inadvertently be the fastest way…

To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I would suggest to my pupils working on abilities in time management, critical thinking, and evaluation. I think that one of my skills…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to prepare them for later years in the subject they are working on and other subjects as well. With most tutors in the US, they only stay around if the student is having moderate to severe trouble (if the student is excelling, the parents don't usually want to pay for more sessions).…

I do think patience, good Communication Skills and the Ability to Make Students Visualise. Also the self-discipline. For one, the number of students working with tutors continues to grow. Two, working 1:1 with students is immensely gratifying, both for the tutor and tutee. And three, a few specific yet generalised characteristics become…

Firstly, I believe that a tutor should always encourage their students. Through encouragement, the students can feel a sense of self-achievement and personal growth. This would hence encourage students to try their best and feel more motivated in their studies. Moreover, I believe a tutor should know each student’s personal learning style and…

Local Reviews

It was easy to get started on Maths tutoring for my son. I registered interest online and received a phone call soon afterwards. I advised my requirements and received a text from our new tutor within a few days. We have had one session so far. I was impressed by how knowledgeable the tutor was, and how relevant she made the session to my sons needs.

Inside Balwyn NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlie practised simplifying fractions and adding and subtracting fractions using number lines for visual support.

In Year 8, Olivia explored concepts of percentages as well as GST and discounts, applying these to real-world scenarios.

For a Year 11 student, Daniel worked through integration by substitution and recognition methods, focusing on how to approach related SAC questions with extended mathematical reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to attempt harder algebra problems, tending to focus on familiar questions; as the tutor noted, "she circled back to easy equations instead of tackling the more challenging ones." This meant less progress with complex substitution and balancing tasks.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student often skipped writing out full working when applying ratios or unpacking redox titration questions—errors in calculation crept in unnoticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 Maths student leaned heavily on their calculator for trigonometric simplifications but missed opportunities to strengthen mental fluency; this slowed problem-solving under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Balwyn North tutor recently saw a Year 9 student who used to hesitate when solving equations now confidently add and subtract terms on both sides to isolate x, tackling problems without prompting.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student who previously struggled with trig identities managed to simplify fractions using trigonometric rules and successfully differentiate inverse trig functions for the first time.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had been guessing at shapes began accurately naming polygons with more than four sides and even transformed numerical digits into English up to 999 without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bede's School.
