The most important things to me are to build the student’s confidence, and to also be encouraging in order for students to not be discouraged as well as ensuring the student truely understands the material. One of my biggest strengths is my patience and ability to explain concepts in a way that suits the student’s learning style. Since…

As all students would have different levels of understanding, the most important thing a tutor can do is to take the time to devise individual learning plans for the students, plans which suit the individual's learning style and would be most effective in seeing them reach their full intellectual capacity. Punctuality and reliability are also…

First and foremost, make sure the student properly understands all the content. From there, a tutor should provide refinement, using their experience to show their students how to tackle exams and tests. I ardently want to see my students succeed, and will put in the effort to achieve this. Completing the most recent version of the study design…

A tutor should be able to adapt their teaching style and tailor it for their students. The lessons should be interactive and engaging so the student is always focused on the class. As a tutor, I would adapt to the students' needs and ensure they are provided with all the resources they need, in order to thrive in their…

Having an environment as such makes the task of learning and teaching easier on both the student and the tutor. One of my strengths as a tutor are that i am able to communicate effectively. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence they need to sit an exam and believe that they have the skills required to answer the questions in front of them. I have had a number of students come to me with issues relating to this, along the lines of 'I just had no idea what to do.' I aim to equip my students…

It is vital, especially in year 12, for a tutor to unlock a student's full potential in a certain subject, in order to ensure that they perform confidently in their exams, fully knowing that they are doing the best that they can, and have utilized all the available resources. Dedication to a student i.e. going above and beyond to cater to a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is show up and show care and interest in the student. Once that happens, you will be able to see what the student is capable of and what and how they can take from the subject. I am incredibly patient, thorough, empathetic, and I like to understand my students and cater to their style. Learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to like a teacher equip students with the ability and tools to approach the problem. Rather than rote learning, giving students the tools allows them to approach problems that they may not have seen as well as that which they had prepared for. Apart from helping them achieve good grades, a tutor could also act as a guide or a right role model figure to inspire and motivate the students. Undoubtedly, the student and the tutor are going to have conversations that are off-topic, having a sound mind to answer those questions a student might have reflect those inner qualities about the tutor…

Support. The education system can be tough, and confidence is fluid along with grades, and it is up to the tutor to remind a student of how far they have come and how capable the student is. The largest impact on results is often not the time spent studying, but the foundational pillar that is psychology as this impacts every part of education.…

I think the tutor has to be someone who is warm and friendly, and someone who the student sees as approachable yet still respects enough to take the lessons seriously. The student needs to feel confident in being able to ask the tutor any questions that they may be unsure about and so the dynamic needs to be one that is welcoming and accepting. I…

One of the best things a tutor can do for a student is offer encouragement and support. Beyond simply teaching the material effectively, tutors have to recognise that for the student, there are compounding events and pressures that they face during high school. Ultimately, it will fall on the tutor to ensure that the student enjoys being tutored…

Honestly - be patient and adaptable. So many kids have come to me after school and shown me a method that their teacher absolutely insists they use, and that they just completely don’t get. Every child learns differently. There’s no point trying to force a specific method if it simply doesn’t work for them - I struggled with this as a…

Definitely support the student, always be there if they need help with questions and a crucial quality that a good tutor must have is patience in my opinion. Inside Black RockTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Isabel practised times tables and division with remainders, then worked on reading comprehension using short stories.

For Year 9 Jack, sessions focused on simplifying and expanding algebraic expressions as well as working with like terms in algebra.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Mia tackled solving linear equations using a CAS calculator and revised geometric sequences and arithmetic sequences through chapter exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for exams left most revision until the week before, which limited time for deep practice and meant she "needed to work on more questions prior to the test."

For a Year 8 student, working mainly on easier exercise numbers was noted: "try completing one or two of the difficult questions... much more effective than just the lower numbered exercises."

In Year 6 maths, messy written calculations sometimes made it hard to find errors; as observed, "needs to lay out his steps on paper." These habits led to last-minute stress and hidden mistakes during assessments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Black Rock noticed Isabel, a Year 9 student, has begun to check her answers independently using the textbook and corrects her own mistakes—a big shift from relying on step-by-step guidance earlier this term.

In Year 11 maths, Grace started preparing questions ahead of each session and now confidently tackles financial maths problems she once found confusing.

Meanwhile, Gisele in Year 3 recently managed to read aloud for an extended period without hesitation and even remembered to pause at commas—something she struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beaumaris Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Black Rock Primary School.
