As a tutor what I can do is to build the confidence of students for the subjects which he or she is struggling with. Give them zero confusion and make everything as easy as possible. I have worked as a lecturer at both state and private sector universities in my home country for more than two years. So I can feel what students' mind is working and…

It is super important for children to feel like they are doing well, and making progress. I think that as a tutor, encouragement is the most important tool that a tutor can use. If the students are not encouraged, they will no longer be motivated to keep trying, and will therefore not improve. My biggest strength as a tutor is my patience. This…

As a student myself I believe it is vital to have a level of understanding and patience when assisting with a child's learning as this develops a safe and healthy learning environment. Aside from my extensive understanding of mathematics and physics, I believe that my personal attributes of empathy, and strong listening and communication skills…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure they understand what they are doing. As a result it is crucial for a tutor to prepare the correct material for the student. It is crucial that a tutor guides the student rather than just helping them get their homework done. Teach a man to fish and he has food for the rest of his…

Have a good working relationship with them. Be patient. Encourage them to 'have a go'. Encourage them to take a 'risk'. Help them to understand that mistakes are ok - they are simply a step in the learning process. Encourage them to do their best. Celebrate their successes. Encourage them to believe in themselves and their abilities. Vast…

I would say one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to show them the compassion and support they need to gain self-confidence and realise their full potential. In my previous tutoring groups, I would often have students who felt like they would never be good academically, and this was simply not true. All that had happened…

The single most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to help them build confidence in their own abilities to learn and overcome challenges. By helping grow and nurture this sense of confidence, a tutor can give a student the tools that they need to learn not only the subject they are working on, but also other subjects and skill or…

Inside Bugle RangesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sydney focused on strengthening multiplication skills using textbook exercises and tackled fraction fundamentals, including equivalence and comparing fractions to decimals.

Year 5 student Sophie worked through complex worded questions and multi-step problems, practised large number multiplication for accuracy, and explored equivalent fractions as well as converting them between mixed numbers and improper forms.

Meanwhile, Jay (Year 4) built fluency in times tables with games and worksheets, and reviewed division strategies, particularly dividing by 4.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often rushed through multi-step worded maths problems, jumping to answers before fully unpacking the question; as one tutor observed, "She needs to practice working out what the question is actually asking her before rushing into the answer."

In Year 6, messy graph work and misaligned numbers made it hard for her to spot errors or check results.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student hesitated to finish homework when tired and needed encouragement to persist.

In senior years, reluctance to show working in geometry left gaps in understanding during lessons on enlargement and area. This sometimes led to frustration and avoidance mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Bugle Ranges tutor noticed Jay, a high school student, now consistently recognises his own mistakes in division problems and shows real resilience—he'll stop, check his work, and correct errors without prompting, which wasn't happening before.

Sophie has shifted from hesitating on new concepts to preparing her own revision "cheat sheet" ahead of lessons; she even initiated positive self-talk games after previously doubting her abilities.

In a recent session with Annabelle (Year 6), the tutor saw her tackle multi-step problem-solving questions independently for the first time, accurately breaking down each part before explaining her reasoning out loud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Barker Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Barker Waldorf School.
