I understand that teachers don't always have time to help students one-on-one and that tutors can help bridge the gap. I believe that learning is an exponential process, so a small victory in a tutoring session can lead to enormous benefits in the student's future. I am passionate about enabling students to maximise their…

Based on my experience as a university student, I find tutors to be more approachable than professors and willing to offer assistance and guidance for any issues students may face. My favourite strength is my ability to easily communicate with younger people, regardless of their age. As an international student, I firmly believe that consistency,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only make them understand what they are teaching them, but also make the student enjoy the process. I am an excellent communicator and understand the subjects that I am good at extremely well. Additionally, I am an extremely adept learner and can easily understand any material that I…

The one-on-one nature of tutoring is significantly conducive to not only the comprehension of the content, but to the students interpersonal skills. Having a mentor will give the student an academic confidence to succeed in what ever path they may decide to take. I am good at explaining the course material to the students level, with examples that…

Being able to understand what are the areas the students are confused with. As well as create a good way of communicating with the students so they feel comfortable to ask any and all questions. I think the tutor has to be someone who is warm and friendly, and someone who the student sees as approachable yet still respects enough to take the lessons seriously. The student needs to feel confident in being able to ask the tutor any questions that they may be unsure about and so the dynamic needs to be one that is welcoming and accepting. I…

I believe having a tutor who presents work in a manageable and stepwise manner is key. many students are embarrassed to admit when they don't understand concepts they may think are simple, or are intimidated by the seeming difficulty of some of the work. Presenting the problems as manageable and breaking them down helps the student gain your trust…

For me the most important aspect of being a tutor is that I must be able to maintain my students motivation. Somewhat like a personal trainer. Most clients hire a personal trainer not solely for their instruction but for their motivation and I belive this also applies in tutoring. Secondly a tutor must be able to explain concepts and ideas on the…

Understanding that no 2 students are the same. Every student is very different and has different methods of learning. Through questioning and perhaps trial and error, it's important for the tutor to decipher what method works best for the student, what the students' weaknesses and strengths are, and use such information to create a tailored…

I think the most important duty as a tutor is to be understanding of a student's difficulties when they are learning and to ensure they never feel as if they are incompetent if they are ever struggling with a new concept. A tutor must teach the underlying concepts and "why things work" rather than just "how things work". A good tutor is much more than just a problem solver. Good tutor builds capability in students to actually use what they learnt to solve and analyze complex real world problems. Strong background and grasp of the subject in question. Currently a…

I believe that the two most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to help them gain a passion for their studies, and to teach them to apply their study skills to all of their subjects. I think that these two factors can really help students succeed with school and allow them to reach their full potential elsewhere in life. One of…

I believe one of the most important things for a tutor is to give unlimited support to their students, answering their questions properly and patiently both in and out of class. what's more, a tutor should design their class for students and always get well-prepared. The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

Support. The education system can be tough, and confidence is fluid along with grades, and it is up to the tutor to remind a student of how far they have come and how capable the student is. The largest impact on results is often not the time spent studying, but the foundational pillar that is psychology as this impacts every part of education.…

Not only to help them with academics as the main goal of a tutor, but also to be a friend and have positive influence on them. Attitude can actually make the difference. Strength: Communication. Sarah McGregor, Carnegie

Inside CarnegieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lucas worked on measurement conversions between units and explored different types of angles using visual examples.

In Year 9, Sarah practised expanding and simplifying algebraic equations to solve for "x," along with adding terms involving variables and numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Aiden focused on quadratic equations—both solving them and reviewing their graphical representations as parabolas—in preparation for an upcoming quiz.

Recent Challenges

Homework was incomplete for a Year 7 student, which limited progress in consolidating division and multiplication skills—one lesson note simply read, "Homework was incomplete."

In Year 9 algebra, confusion with equation signs persisted when working through substitution tasks; as one tutor observed, "Alex is slightly confused by the sign while substituting value in the equation," leading to repeated errors during practice.

A senior student tackling probability scenarios sometimes hesitated to start multi-step problems, pausing at worded questions and requiring extra prompts to extract relevant information before attempting solutions. This often meant less time spent on building fluency and confidence within sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Carnegie tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with matrix multiplication; after revisiting earlier lessons, she now attempts the harder two-matrix problems without waiting for help.

Another high school student has gone from struggling with algebraic manipulation to quickly solving for unknowns—her speed and accuracy have noticeably improved during problem sets.

In primary, one learner who often guessed answers now takes time to double-check fractions before responding out loud. Last session, he completed every question on his own and asked for an extra challenge at the end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carnegie Primary School.
