The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is guide and show the path to the student. By showing the path, the student can learn to walk on it once. Then when they practice enough with that same technique, they can walk along that path by themselves. My strengths are the techniques in how I tutor and my patience with the people I tutor. My…

The tutor should understand his subject matter to be able to deliver complicated ideas to the students simply and concisely. If the tutor cannot do so, he should further his knowledge of that subject matter. I love to use descriptive and outside the box methods to understand mathematical concepts. Because school teaching is restrict by time, the…

A tutor can change a student's perspective towards studies and make difficult subjects easy for them. Thereby boosting a student's confidence in the subject, which enables them to further share this knowledge with fellow classmates when they have a difficulty. I am very patient and willing to explain the concepts again and again with examples till…

The goal of a chemistry tutor is to help the students gain confidence in their subject and help the student with their grades. It is important a tutor is able to help a student gain enjoyment from the subject so that they are inspired and happy to continue to study when the tutor is not around. I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to teach a student how to pursue their own studies, that is, if I can teach a student how to study without the need for a tutor, that's worth more than tutoring them the whole year and it will serve them well for the rest of their life. An excellent tutor will keep their students…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to instill a sense of confidence in the student about their own ability. The tutor can demonstrate to the student that they can achieve their different goals and help them achieve these. The tutor can also create a plan to show the student how to goal will be achieved. I think one extremely important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to adapt their teaching to the individual needs and abilities of each student, and adapt themselves to the student, not force the student to adapt to them. This involves listening to the student and observing how they work and then responding to those things. Another extremely…

The most important role is to build understanding and confidence. A good tutor should create a comfortable environment where the student should feel free to ask questions, identify gaps in their knowledge, and gradually making students capable of solving problems on their own. I focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind concepts or…

Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. However, it is important for the tutor to recognize this and invite the student into the circle of discussion and let them contribute. It is crucial to create a safe space that is…

I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. Often, students seek tutoring because they believe they cannot achieve their academic goals, and if that thought persists, it can hinder their ability to perform. Having someone who believes in them helps boost their morale significantly, making them…

Above all else, I believe a chemistry tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership…

Jacqui, Daglish

Inside DaglishTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Lily focused on division of fractions and key algebra skills, including graphing and basic trigonometry.

For Year 10, Ava practiced volume and surface area calculations for composite shapes and tackled negative indices with some review of algebraic expressions.

In Year 11, Jack reviewed factorisation techniques alongside the first three index laws, using worked examples to solidify understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided homework tasks, leading to extra time spent re-explaining algebra and index laws during sessions ("did not attempt the homework set for him last lesson").

In Year 11 Chemistry, difficulty organizing notes meant that concepts like equilibrium graphs had to be revisited across multiple lessons before progress was made.

One Year 8 learner struggled with fractions and negative numbers, yet rarely wrote out working—this often hid misunderstandings until errors appeared in final answers.

Meanwhile, a senior English student hesitated to write ideas down due to perfectionism; as one tutor put it, "needed more confidence putting English ideas on paper."

Recent Achievements

A Daglish tutor noticed one high school student, previously hesitant to show her working, now confidently explains each step aloud while solving complex algebra problems—a real shift from her earlier guesswork.

Another senior student has started tackling challenging essay questions independently, using specific quotes and refining arguments after struggling last term with structure and evidence.

In a recent Year 4 session, a younger learner who used to rush through multiplication is now pausing to write out every step, reducing mistakes and showing more careful reasoning.

Last week, she completed all division problems without skipping steps.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Shenton College.
