Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can provide…

Be interactive by continuously observing where they are at. Show don't tell. Keep challenging them by pushing the boundaries of their knowledge, but be mindful of their confidence level. I like to provide examples and come up with stories when I explain concepts. I show students how to become comfortable with content. And how to become confident…

The most important you can do for a student is to know their abilities and work their capabilities to make them better at the subject they're trying to get better at. It is also important to understand every student is different and not all of them can grapple a concept quickly. But as a tutor, I must make sure I am accounting for each students…

The most important thing to being a tutor is the passion towards teaching and the motivation to get the best results from his/her students. It is also crucial for a tutor to be friendly and approachable to every student. A tutor should be available to help the student cope with any difficulties, even if this requires an extra personal approach to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help the student understand rather than showing the student, as when you understand the process you're less likely to forget than when you just know the process. Relate. The student will understand the concept once it resonates with something the student is interested in. A tutor needs to describe the concept, demonstrate the concept and invite the student to attempt the concept. This open dialogue, dispelling fear of failure and welcoming the opportunity to learn is an important attribute a tutor must…

Believing in your student has to be one of the most important things a tutor can do as you help the student know that nothing is impossible and they can do it all. I think a tutor can change your perspective and attitude towards dealing with challenges in life. I think it's important to highlight that if you fail at something you are not “bad†at it. You usually just have to approach the problem from a different angle and have the confidence to make mistakes and move forward. I've personally found that…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

Inside Fortitude ValleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Adam worked on solving algebraic expressions with fractions and reviewed angle properties of parallel lines, as well as calculating the volume and surface area of cylinders and prisms.

In Year 10, Laila focused on understanding thermal conductivity and heat transfer types for a physics assignment, along with practicing natural logarithm graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Priscilla concentrated on designing a scale model of her school oval for maths, applying measurement concepts like scales, plans, and data collection to her project.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student left her school textbook at home and struggled to visualize angles in complex polygons, which slowed her problem-solving during geometry tasks.

In Year 11 Physics, unclear assignment instructions led to confusion—"the requirements for the physics assignment were too vague to understand," a tutor noted—which resulted in missed criteria and incomplete research before writing.

A Year 6 learner repeatedly forgot both homework and key materials, such as notebooks and flashcards, making it hard to review prior content or track progress.

Each of these scenarios meant valuable lesson time was spent retracing steps instead of advancing skills or building confidence.

Recent Achievements

A Fortitude Valley tutoring session saw one Year 11 student finally break through on worded bearing questions—last time, she struggled to set them up, but this week she worked through several independently and even tackled a tricky exam-style problem.

Another high schooler had previously rushed her assignments, but now she's pausing to ask clarifying questions aloud before starting and carefully checking each step; this shift has meant fewer errors in her homework.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to count slowly is now confidently using the "stairs method" for addition, finishing sums much more quickly than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brisbane Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Angelorum College.
