A good tutor makes sure the fundamentals actually stick, not just enough to pass a test, so the student can apply it later, not just repeat it. Building confidence matters just as much, since a lot of students struggle more from self-doubt than ability. Adapting your approach when something isn't clicking, and gradually making the student more…

Listen first, teach second. Understanding where a student is struggling, and why, matters more than just delivering content. Beyond that, building their confidence so they start trusting their own thinking, and making them feel safe enough to ask 'stupid' questions without embarrassment. I'm patient, and I adapt quickly. If one explanation isn't…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them cultivate the habit of life-long learning beyond high school. -The tutor should (if possible) explain the context behind the content they are teaching and how it will potentially benefit the student. - The tutor should also discern the abilities of the student carefully…

It is important that a tutor is patient and is willing to break concepts down. A student should not feel intimidated or stupid, which requires the tutor put aside their own ego. A tutor needs to be able to assess a student's knowledge level and start from there. Working one on one, tutors can make personal connections more than teachers can and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is be understanding. It is important that we keep in mind that we used to be like them and that each person has a different way of learning. If a tutor is understanding, not only will it enhance their relationship with the student but it would also boost the opportunity and the attitude of the…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel supported and understood. When a student feels comfortable asking questions and isn’t scared of making mistakes, they learn so much better. A tutor should explain things in a way that actually makes sense to the student, not just repeat what’s in the textbook. And most…

Build their confidence alongside their skills, since a lot of students who struggle with maths and english aren't lacking ability, they're lacking belief that they can do it. A good tutor also meets students where they are, explains the "why" behind a method rather than just the steps, and creates a space where it's safe to get things wrong while…

I believe that tutors should not only help students academically succeed, but also holistically provide support to support student wellbeing. As marks should not mean everything, despite schools often internalising that academics are important, I believe that tutors should act as a guidance/mentor for students. Tutors should also constantly…

The most imperative thing a tutor should do is to understand the nature and behavior of their student towards the subject and change the teaching style so that the student can get the hang of the subject thoroughly. A tutor could help the student reach his or her goal. Help them gain the required knowledge through various tasks. And also not to be too judgmental and see that every student has his or her different capabilities in reaching…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student well enough so that he/she no longer needs a tutor and is able to independently accumulate knowledge most of the time. Self-sufficiency ,in my opinion, is the most valuable skill a student should have and a good tutor empowers their students to cultivate it. According to famed…

Inside Harris ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student worked on addition and subtraction of double-digit numbers, with extra focus on using a number line for subtraction and strategies for borrowing.

In Year 10, Anika tackled advanced algebraic fractions—practicing addition, subtraction, and factorisation—and also expanded and simplified expressions involving surds.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Yash covered properties of the nucleus in Physics, specifically exploring nuclear fission and fusion through real-world examples from Module 8.

Recent Challenges

In Year 2 maths, one student's tendency to draw and become distracted during lessons led to unfinished subtraction tasks; "gets multiplication and division confused with addition and subtraction" was a concern when homework wasn't completed.

In Year 8 algebra, another learner avoided showing working for factorising surds—"remembering how minus signs and brackets must be used" became an issue when errors weren't visible.

A Year 12 physics student relied heavily on memory for Doppler effect formulas but struggled to recall them under HSC exam-style pressure, making it harder to benefit from feedback after practice questions.

Recent Achievements

One Harris Park tutor noticed a big change in a Year 8 student who, after initially struggling with expanding brackets, was confidently working through them independently by the end of their session and even began manipulating fractions more effectively.

Another high schooler recently asked several thoughtful questions about surds—a shift from earlier lessons when he hesitated to speak up—and then applied new rules across problems without prompting.

In a Year 4 lesson, a student who used to guess at double-digit subtraction is now using the number line method consistently and checks her own answers before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Granville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Oliver's Primary School.
