I think it is important for tutors to be able to identify which areas students struggle with, then find a way to break it down and explain it to students so they fully understand. Tutors need to be patient and also be able to listen to what questions the students have, understand the problem and then explain the question to them slowly. Tutors…

Naturally a tutor should be knowledgeable in the subjects that they teach but I beleive that it is equally important for a tutor to have a genuine interest in helping their students succeed. For me this involves being patient and encouraging when your students are struggling, showing enthusiasm whil tutoring and being a generally friendly and kind…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to feel confident in their studies by adapting to their needs. As every student will prefer to study in different ways, so it is important that the tutor understands how their student studies best and supports them. Students may feel demotivated if they are…

As a tutor, I think the enthusiasm is the most important. For a tutor, they have to pay as much effort as they can to help student to solve their questions and let them to understand the question well, they can not give up in the process. Also, they have to prepare well before the tutorial so that students will not waste their time. I have been a…

I think one of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence within them. I believe confidence is the key for all students across any level to be able to achieve their desired study outcomes. Without the belief that they have the skills and resources to succeed in any aspect they desire, students can be left…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence to excel in their education. Without confidence, students may feel too uncomfortable to ask questions, and may lack the motivation to learn, thus hindering their learning. Therefore, it is vital for tutors to instill confidence in their students by…

Understand the student's way of thinking. Every student deserves attention from a tutor to channel their thoughts in the right direction. It is the primary responsibility of a tutor to help students strengthen their concepts and build strong fundamentals in subjects. I can relate with younger minds easily and understand the problems that they face…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student build confidence. A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

In the past, I have dealt with tough students with patience and empathy, clearing my students’ doubts and making them gain an in – depth understanding of the subject. A good tutor will work themselves out of a job. This is because a good tutor will not only teach the student the content but also how to learn. Therefore the student will be able to become independent of the tutor and then be able to teach other students. I am able to explain concepts clearly and concisely in a number of different ways. Thereby…

To attentively listen to the student (their stories, worries, and struggles), to identify areas that the student need more work on, trying different learning approaches, to be able to break down large problems into smaller easily managed tasks, and to share our life and study skills with them where relevant. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to study and learn properly, as it then gives them the ability to use that skill outside of tutoring sessions and greatly improve their grades as well as their academic confidence. Another thing I believe to be important is making the learning experience as…

Inside KewTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Annie revised linear equations and explored polynomials and real functions, using worked examples to clarify each step.

In Year 9, Lenny tackled trigonometry concepts with a focus on SOH CAH TOA and also reviewed past tests covering linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ethan practiced times tables (3s and 4s) alongside school homework on multiplication, supporting accuracy through repeated exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student's stress during tests led to misreading questions and answering incorrectly—"she misread the condition or questions, hence wrote down the wrong answer." She was encouraged to highlight key words and practice under timed conditions.

In Year 9 Maths, messy or incomplete working made isolating variables in equations harder; a tutor noted that neater layout would help track steps for midpoint and distance tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to show written working in mixed fraction subtraction due to fear of mistakes, which slowed improvement and left gaps when reviewing errors together.

Recent Achievements

A Kew tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, after previously relying heavily on step-by-step guidance, now solves simultaneous equations using the elimination method with much more independence and even asks for extra practice when unsure.

In senior Chemistry, another high schooler who used to hesitate with equilibrium questions is now confidently tackling harder examples and did especially well on their first SAC, showing clear improvement since last term.

Meanwhile, in primary maths, Annie moved from needing help with multiplying and dividing fractions to gradually answering these on her own by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kew Primary School.
