A tutor should provide what a teacher can't. There is a reason that students seek tutoring, and it is therefore a chemistry tutor's role to meet their needs. I believe patience is the most important thing. Not everyone thinks the same, and its important for a tutor to understand this, and to move at a pace that suits the student, whilst also…

I know what its like to feel lost and anxious about academics. I have been demoted to the bottom class, twice in my school years and it would be selfish of me not to share how I overcame my own insecurities with others on a similar path. Patience, I don't like to rush things, everything needs its time grow and bear fruit. Communication, I speak…

In my opinion, patience is the most important. Tutor is different from a teacher because as a chemistry tutor, it allows us more time to explain, and allows students more time to ask. Only if I show patience, my students are not afraid to keep asking. I think this is the whole point of tutoring. I grow up in an asian city so I had a lot of…

To build intrinsic motivation. How much they value their success is up to them but their enjoyment of studying as well as how effective they are at studying are things that I can affect. This can ensure that they see long term success. I try to be as patient as possible; I'm someone who takes longer to process some concepts and I so I know how…

I think the most important thing is for the student to truly understand what hes actually doing in the subject. The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to equip the student with the skills to find answers and explore the subject on their own. Whenever my students ask me questions outside of the syllabus, I involve them in the process of looking up papers and interpreting scientific language. I am able to come up with analogies to help students…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is help students gain clarity in the concepts they don't understand well from school. And practice is key. And in math I think it's important as a tutor to make math fun for students, and help them understand formulas and equations in a fun, comprehensive and easy way rather than just to…

A tutor should make the student feel capable by building understanding, not just giving answers. The most important thing is to teach students how to think and solve problems independently, while also giving them confidence and structure. A good tutor also creates a supportive environment where students feel comfortable, respected, and motivated…

I believe explaining a concept in such a way that the student understands it intuitively and can thus use that understanding to solve different problems, rather than simply rote-learning a series of facts, is an incredibly important part of being a chemistry tutor. The tutor should be adding to a student's toolkit such that they can solve a…

I think the most important things I can do for a student revolve around mentorship. Being a chemistry tutor is not just about imparting information and tips to the student. It is recognising the student as a whole, looking after their mental wellbeing, and ensuring that what they're learning is being tailored to them, rather than a cookie-cut…

I would say the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. I believe the most important things a chemistry tutor can do for a student to is support the student to the best of their abilities and to also believe in the student. Inside MelvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Michael focused on mastering multi-digit multiplication using distributive strategies and worked on memorising times tables for quicker recall.

For Year 8, Paige reviewed the properties of quadrilaterals and triangles through guided exercises and began exploring transformations of 2D shapes.

Meanwhile, Oli in Year 9 tackled simplifying algebraic expressions and index laws, then moved to practice solving linear equations and graphing them by hand.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student repeatedly completed problem-solving steps in their head for multiplication, rarely writing out their process; as one tutor observed, "he needs to write down in detail how he solves problems, rather than just the answer." This habit meant errors were difficult to spot or correct and made review sessions inefficient.

In a senior class, another student arrived without reviewing prior lesson notes—resulting in time spent re-teaching last week's material instead of progressing with new algebra concepts.

Missed homework and disorganized notes also slowed progress in Years 8 and 11, leaving important topics like summary statistics under-practiced before tests.

Recent Achievements

One Melville tutor recently noticed that a Year 10 student, Oli, has started reviewing his lesson notes before sessions and as a result, scored highly on his latest quiz—a big shift from last term when he'd often forget past material.

In Year 7 maths, Hayden used to rely heavily on step-by-step guidance but is now tackling similar problems independently after seeing one example, writing out solutions clearly without prompting.

For a younger student in Year 4, Michael—who previously guessed answers quietly—has begun thinking out loud while working through multiplication problems, making it easier to spot and address misunderstandings.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melville Primary School.
