It is important for tutors to understand that not every student is the same and they learn at different paces. It is crucial for tutors to be able to create a flexible and a suitable lesson for each individual student to efficiently maximise the student’s learning. As a former highschool student and current university student, I understand the…

Likewise, a tutor should always work to teach lifelong problem-solving and learning skills while giving students the tools and encouragement to use these skills to excel in their learning. The most important thing a tutor can do for students is to nurture their desire to learn and continue learning. This could be done by reinforcing the material whether they have yet to or already have learnt the material. By reinforcing it, students will have familiarity with the content and make it easier to tackle questions. As students feel…

One of the most important things tutor can do for a student is provide them with a lot of feedbacks as well as lots of revision. It is from feedback that students understand where they have been going wrong and how to improve on it. Revision is essential because knowing content is one thing, learning to apply them is another. From experience, I…

MENTOR/TUTOR It is important that tutors have a friendly approach to students and make sure that students set a goal for every lesson. Actually engage and interact with the student to find where, and more importantly why they're struggling or need help. This not only is a short term solution to a single question which may be raised, but is extremely helpful in the long run as their problem solving skills and overall performance improves. Also, make sure the student actually…

I believe a tutor must not only be an academic mentor but must also help students maintain a positive outlook on learning. Although learning can be difficult at times for students, it is important that tutors can empathise with them and provide the most suitable advice to motivate students and help them maintain a resilient mindset. I believe…

I truly believe this will be actively listening and giving plenty of feedback. A good tutor will always make sure that the student really understands the concept and knows how to effectively teach the student in a way that works for them. Different students have different ways of learning and it’s the tutors responsibility to make sure that they…

Inside MillerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ariana reviewed her school exam paper, focusing on angle relationships and probability, and practised recalling square roots and squares through quick-fire questions.

In Year 10, Jack worked on solving quadratic equations using the factorising method and interpreting functions by sketching their graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Liam tackled differentiation from first principles and applied the chain rule to a set of practice problems.

Recent Challenges

Ariana (Year 7) often leaves homework incomplete, especially revision sets covering earlier topics—recently, most Year 7 test questions were left unanswered.

Messy and unclear working in long division and graphing tasks has made it hard for teachers to follow her process; as noted, "her graphs are quite messy and hard to understand."

In exam settings, she struggles when notes are lost or not referred to—she forgot angle properties after misplacing her angles notes.

After setbacks or confusing lessons, Ariana can lose confidence quickly ("I can't," she said before eventually completing a long division question), making her hesitant to attempt new problems.

Recent Achievements

One Miller tutor noticed a Year 8 student who used to hesitate with long division now solving questions independently and even explaining her steps out loud—last session, she completed all homework without mistakes.

In a recent high school tutoring session, a Year 11 student who previously struggled with exam errors began identifying his own mistakes during revision, correcting them on the spot rather than waiting for guidance.

Another high schooler, after weeks of confusion over congruent triangles, was finally able to prove them unaided and started structuring his working much more clearly in his notes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Miller Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Therese Catholic Primary School.
