I believe tutors pass on a sense of confidence to their students as they develop their skills. It is that virtue that students bring back to their classroom ready to apply what they have learned during their tutor's session. Patience is a key value that I possess and that will make me succeed in this role. Acknowledging that different student…

The most important thing is that to really be connected with your students. You have to also know their strengths and hobbies so you can plan your teaching methodology and approach. I am very friendly and open. I always reach out to my students even after my lessons. I make sure that my classes are fun and very productive. I always put extra fun…

I think the most important thing to understand as a tutor is that different students think differently. Certain students will naturally have more or less affinity to different subjects, but also different ways of learning. Trying to figure out which way to best teach requires understanding which way students are best able to learn. For instance,…

Understand the student, be patient with them and rather than becoming the student's boss, become their leader/role model and guide them towards their goals. A tutor should also have a growth mindset with his students and always be positive not letting his students drop their heads. I'm very patient and I also completed a Psychology internship in a…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build a strong understanding of fundamentals, boost a student's confidence, and create a supportive learning environment. A good tutor should encourage questions, provide clear explanations, and help students develop independent problem-solving skills. My strengths include patience, clear…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is help the student build a genuine understanding of the material, rather than just having them memorize the answers. What this means in practice is asking the kinds of questions that push them to actually think, being patient when concepts take a bit of time to land and adjusting the explanations until…

The most important thing a tutor can do for his/her student is to provide them assistance on topics outside their course as it not only reduces their stress level thus making it easier for students to focus but also at the same time students can relate to the teacher and thus aiding in their understanding. Ensuring that they grasp the knowledge taught is the most crucial thing for me. If they are able to teach it to others, I feel that I have done my job as a tutor. I find it second nature to explain theories to others. I also find ways to make memorising easier. My favourite would be to say tht unsaturated fats are kinky, this is due to the kinks…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is show them the importance of intrinsic motivation. Whilst any tutor can simply give a student the answer, an excellent tutor will inspire a student to work through challenges and learn for the sake of learning. This intrinsic motivation will last beyond primary and high school, and is…

One of the most important things when tutoring is to maxmise your effort to help a student in any way possible, without actually doing an assignment/answering the question for them. I believe my role as a tutor is to help grow self-efficacy and to empower my students, so they are confident in tackling any problem. I am well spoken and am able to…

I believe it is important for tutors to build students' confidence and boost their self-esteem. It is important to acknowledge that a student is doing well when they truly are; to encourage them to be resilient when it gets tough. This way students are able to conquer any challenge without fear which enables them to learn more effectively. This…

Teaching effectively so that the student can understand the content. It is important to make the students do their own work, rather than doing it for them as they do not learn effectively if the tutor does the work for them. The tutor must also commit to every class and treat every student equally with respect. - My strength are maths and…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a comfortable and supportive environment where the student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. I think making students feel like they're being seen and heard is a really powerful thing, and to make clear that a tutor isn't just a fixed resource like a book or a video but someone you can interact with and learn from just from someone being there to guide you. I think learning from someone showing you is so much more powerful than just…

In the context of Science and Mathematics, the key aspect is HOW to think. Science requires imagination, innovation as well as an excellent recall and grasp of modern scientific understanding. Mathematics, being a tool - requires the students to be well-equipped with the basic mathematical tools. To directly answer this question; a tutor must…

I think it is important for the tutor to influence the student to be more enthusiastic towards his studies. It is easier to learn stuff with focus and the right attitude. The tutor has to try and make sessions interesting. Also, at the end of the day, the student must not be dependent on the tutor. As a tutor, you know you have succeeded when once…

Inside MortlakeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on adding and subtracting fractions, then practiced multiplying and dividing both mixed and improper fractions using visual aids.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on expanding brackets in algebraic expressions and began factorising basic expressions for homework support.

For Year 11, Olivia reviewed the strategic role of financial management along with objectives of finance and explored the interdependence between finance and other business functions within her Commerce studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 maths student often rushed to answers without showing step-by-step working, especially in algebra and inequalities—this made it hard to spot sign errors or missing pronumerals. "He tends to work out the answers in his head instead of writing out his working," a tutor noted, which led to small mistakes accumulating on assessments.

In senior economics, a Year 12 struggled with structuring business report evaluations and sometimes neglected reviewing class notes for macroeconomic concepts.

One Year 9 English student read quickly but overlooked grammatical errors and failed to organise ideas clearly in written responses, impacting both comprehension and expression.

Recent Achievements

One Mortlake tutor noticed real shifts across different year levels recently. In Year 8 maths, Tyler used to skip showing his working out, but now consistently sets it out for problems he can't do mentally, which has helped him catch errors before moving on.

In senior Business Studies, Kai moved from mostly descriptive writing to crafting more analytical paragraphs in his reports after targeted feedback—he now explains cause and effect instead of just listing facts.

Meanwhile, Zarraf (Year 6 English) went from hesitating to share ideas aloud to making thoughtful predictions about challenging texts and backing them up with details from the story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
