A tutor provides a supportive environment for their students. This is most true for the students who struggle the most, who may need more help than their peers who don't find the topic as difficult. Hello, I am a first-year university student studying the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Master of Engineering Accelerated Pathway at the University…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to inspire a sense of lifelong learning for the subject that is being tutored. My major strength is my appreciation of the subjects I tutor. Along with that, I always prepare myself with material, supplementary exercises and further reading before class. As a student engineer, I am also very adept…

It's very important that a tutor can passionately engage with a student and journey with them as they progress. I also think that a tutor's role as a mentor in general is important I am very passionate about it and that allows me to enthusiastically and actively engage with students and try hard to help them understand and appreciate more…

In addition, develop their critical thinking and algorithms when studying. The most important things a tutor can do to a student is to make the student not to need a tutor any more (Be able to work alone without assistance from the tutor). My strengths as a tutor include: 1. My ability to make young students independent of myself. 2. My ability to raise the interest of the learner in the subjects of…

I believe that the most important thing to do is to communicate with my student and get an idea of what they know and don't know. It is important to build upon existing knowledge to explain other concepts and to avoid confusing my student. I think my strength is being patient with my student. I also believe I can encourage improvement and work on…

To prepare for class and constantly check up on their progress. Students often need help outside of class, which lots of tutors do not provide. I am always accessible outside of class hours, ensuring students get help whenever they need it. Another important thing is to motivate the student. Understanding the individual needs and learning styles of each student is crucial. Also, fostering a supportive, non-judgmental environment is key for students to ask questions freely and grasp concepts without worrying about making mistakes. Lastly, finding alternative strategies for solving problems is very important if the student is stuck on a…

Personally, the most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire the student to be curious. Being in a 1-to-1 setting, it gives an ideal environment for the student to get personalised help. For me, I always let my students know no questions are stupid, I do not want the student to be afraid of asking question, and to ask questions whenever in…

The most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion is be patient with a student and try and understand the problem from their perspective. By doing this, you are able to see more clearly the issue that they might be having. I also believe that finding the best learning method for a student is a key part of the role as a tutor, and this will…

I think the main role of a tutor is encouraging confidence in their students. I have found that most of the time my students know the answer, they're just too afraid to say it. Or they may be on the right track and need a little guidance to fully understand a concept, making problem solving skills another thing that I try to pass on to my…

Cater to their individual needs - some people fall behind in school not because they are "less intelligent", but because of the "one shoe fits all" approach followed by many of our schools. It is important distinguish each person as an individual learner, and adjust accordingly. I also strongly believe in comprehension over memorisation.…

I think a common misconception about a tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The difference…

In the teaching phase, student-focused teaching would be my method of teaching, which is to discover what the students need instead of dumping knowledge, whilst showing respect and understanding. I would highly recommend using EzyMath Tutoring for face to face or Facetime tutoring. My children's confidence in maths has increased dramatically since we have been using them. Will our tutor is excellent! We haven't even needed to stop during self isolation!
Sarah, The Gap

Inside The GapTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Will focused on factor trees and their use in multiplication, then reviewed basic algebra concepts.

For Year 8, Viran worked through exam revision by tackling a mix of basic, application, and complex problems across recent topics.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Lauren practiced finding the area and perimeter for a housing plan assignment, using real-world measurements to apply geometric reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student repeatedly avoided asking for help until prompted, especially in algebra and electrical engineering—"he finds it really difficult to know where to begin"—leading to missed opportunities for feedback and slower progress on homework.

In a Year 8 lesson, the lack of clear written working in equations caused confusion when revisiting earlier steps; messy notes made it hard to track mistakes or improvements.

One Year 3 student still counted with fingers and rushed addition tasks, which resulted in frequent errors and frustration during basic arithmetic practice.

Senior students sometimes submitted assignments with incomplete or context-lacking notes, making revision more challenging later on.

Recent Achievements

One The Gap tutor noticed a high school student, Viran, has shifted from needing repeated prompting to now asking for help independently as soon as he's stuck—he used to wait quietly or guess.

Another older student, Rurari, who previously took minimal notes and stayed quiet during sessions, is now actively taking detailed notes and regularly asks questions to clarify concepts like the Unit Circle.

In a recent primary session, Tara moved beyond just identifying fractions; she can now confidently explain fraction equivalence and represent them visually without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Gap State High School.
