A tutor should make the student feel capable by building understanding, not just giving answers. The most important thing is to teach students how to think and solve problems independently, while also giving them confidence and structure. A good tutor also creates a supportive environment where students feel comfortable, respected, and motivated…

A tutor should provide a student with additional resources; have a positive, encouraging attitude and make sure to be understanding of the student's needs. The tutor should also be able to lift the student's confidence, as sometimes this can make all the difference. I am a patient, reliable, organised individual and I am willing to help students,…

The first thing would be to establish a plan of goals and expectations and help the student identify their role in this plan. Once a tutor has an idea of the expectation of the parents/school/ students then only can progress take shape, and this might have many forms and variations as to how this is executed as the student grows or stalls. So,…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student having the ability to take pressure off the students. I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student to is support the student to the best of their abilities and to also believe in the student. Supporting the student to the best of their abilities means that the student will have more assistance for their tutors to achieve their goals. And we as tutors must believe in the abilities…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and understanding. Forcing an expectation can create insecurity, which can further decrease a students confidence, and hence academic ability. I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

An important role of the tutor to do this is to assist the student to learn in a way they can understand. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be very clear and not convoluted when explaining topics, equations, etc. to students, as it can be very easy to get intimated as a student and end up confused. I believe it is also important not to assume any knowledge straight away from students but to intentionally ask what it is that they…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is, teach a student the joy of learning and adapting to new problems on their own. Inside BictonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Xavier focused on adding and subtracting larger numbers, practising three-digit addition and takeaways to build confidence with bigger values.

In Year 7, Alice revised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as tackling measurement conversions such as millimetres to kilometres using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Max worked through algebraic equations involving variables alongside adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions that include variables.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student struggled to set out addition and subtraction clearly, often omitting working for multi-step problems—she sometimes is too quick to give an answer or gets confused about what number is used for what part of solving the question.

In Year 8, a student's decimals work was held back by difficulty lining up columns when adding or subtracting, making errors harder to spot.

For a senior student (Year 10), test revision focused only on familiar fraction types; less time went into practicing new question formats.

When homework was missed without notice in Years 7 and 9, gaps in skill development persisted into following lessons.

Recent Achievements

A Bicton tutor noticed a big shift in one high school student, Poppy, who previously hesitated with algebra but now rearranges equations on her own and is even tackling multiplication with brackets—something she used to avoid.

Another secondary student, Chloe, moved from needing hints to solve improper-to-mixed fraction questions to working through most of them confidently and making only minor mistakes.

With a younger learner, Xavier, sessions have focused on building independence; he now counts digits without being prompted and tries new problems solo instead of waiting for help. Last week, he finished all his addition exercises unassisted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bicton Primary School.
