When students feel safe to learn this way, they become more engaged, motivated, and able to reach their potential. My strengths as a tutor lie in my ability to explain concepts clearly…

Based on my experience, adopting a step-by-step approach that emphasizes understanding is the most effective way to teach concepts. Additionally, providing students with well-prepared notes and practice exercises is incredibly beneficial for their learning. I am patient with students because I understand that every student learns at their own pace…

The capacity to communicate in such a way that the learner feels driven, excited, and confident in their ability to master and enjoy whatever challenges come along is one of the most crucial personal attributes of a competent instructor. In other words, a good tutor needs to be good with people, especially when it comes to engaging young kids in…

Establish the appropriate attitude towards studying. A tutor, besides supporting their student academically at the moment, should be able to build the learning culture by stimulating the student's curiosity and appreciation towards the subject and studying as a whole. A tutor must understand a student first. I also think making a lively session and lightening up the session helps release stress and increase the grasping power of students. I firmly believe that making student's confident about the subject is the most important thing. A tutor is someone who guides the student to the solution also letting the student explore the new entities. It is not like providing the question and the answer at the same time. A tutor must be able to win the heart of the student so the student loves…

Never get angry at a student for asking the same question repeatedly. They are asking because we have not done a good enough job in explaining to them. So we must be patient and ensure we explain as clear as possible. It also very important for a tutor to encourage and motivate students. Sometimes students say they want to give up but we must…

Maximize their potential for learning and increase their awareness of their own strengths by creating a conducive learning environment (i.e. strength-based approach, encouragement, inquiry-based learning, one-on-one teaching and learning). As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to impose upon them the enjoyment of the process of learning. Inside BraesideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Grace focused on adding fractions with different denominators and expressing percentage change, using visual aids to clarify concepts.

In Year 10, Jack worked on factorising trinomials—including both monic and non-monic forms—and used the quadratic formula to solve challenging equations.

For VCE Further Maths, Mia revised matrices through practice worksheets and tackled financial maths and data analysis questions aligned with her current school topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Physics student relied on prompts to recall electromagnetism formulas; as one tutor noted, "he only vaguely remembered equations unless shown," which made tackling unfamiliar problems slow and uncertain.

In Year 11 Methods, another student attempted all steps in their head when rearranging algebraic equations, but skipped showing working—leading to hidden sign errors and lost marks.

A younger student in Year 5 found switching between Bitpaper and Zoom on the iPad distracting, erasing annotations mid-explanation instead of focusing on content.

These process obstacles left students second-guessing themselves during assessments and slowed progress through more advanced topics.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Braeside noticed a real shift with one Year 10 student who previously struggled to connect algebraic concepts—she now independently completes quadratic factorisation and even plugs her solutions directly into equations without prompting.

In Year 12 physics, another student who was hesitant about applying formulas is now confidently answering questions involving magnetic fields, accurately using the left-hand rule and explaining split ring commutators.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has begun finishing all her homework with neat formatting and started back-checking her own answers—a big step up from last term's reluctance to review her work.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Information & Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Louis de Montfort's School.
